Define massive . . . .

Not what I would call massive, but not tiny either.  More a mischievous pre-teen. The wall in the background is 6' tall for perspective.  I'm looking forward to it being massive at some point.  They definitely show healthy growth at this stage of maturity.  I have at least set a bar (albeit low) for some others to post some photos.

any others  - I know you guys have them

You realise this is an International Palm Society forum??

A lot of these threads seem very Cali based which imho is not good for the forum in general.... Constant Cali and coconut threads have turned a few people off pt.

I could start as many Aussie only threads as I wanted but I don't because it's not very inclusive.... Nor do I see any Florida only threads posted etc etc

Agree!

Cali only?

let me explain

the palms out here don't look like the Queensland palms - you Blokes are in a much more tropical area.

many think of Cali as tropical but its not- its damn dry, can get to freezing in winter, heavy fog near the coast, pollution falls on the plants, bad water that's super expensive,

so my interest was to see what they do in my area, how large they get , how healthy etc.....

I can see that it would be irritating not to be able to show off your prize palm so   .......lets see any BIG CURLY !

Steve 99 - that thing is a showstopper - in my viewpoint one of the best looking palms I have seen on the forum

I'm thinking of getting a small one. What kind of growth rate do they have in SoCal?

Looking good Brett.  Appears its settled in and really taking off!

From my standpoint, these appear to be one of the faster large heeled Dypsis, relatively speaking. I would say slow when younger to moderate after a trunk forms.

Thanks, Jim. It will be 2 years in the ground from a 20 gallon sized plant this October so I hope it is getting fully established!

great thread

I'm sure you were expecting this.. I just pulled the lowest leaf base and now getting near a foot of trunk.. :)

Roughly 6 months ago..

The trunk on the D. slick willy/bef is no slouch either

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Two part question.  From the point it started forming trunk to this amount of trunk how long?  Part 2, how old is the D slick willy/bef?  Both look great!

NIce Gary!! But the "trunk" below the lowest leaf base is 5 feet? Sure looks like 30" at most in this pic... ?

Took this update pic tonight of the trunk...

and here was the first flower spathe I cut off last year as I heard the first ones rarely take well.

Tracy, From starting to trunk, till a foot, maybe 1.5 years? germinate to trunk? Probably 15-17 years..?  As for the Slick Willy, its a single trunk version which is not common, I have noted that multiple trunk ones are much slower to gain size. While I got that one as a decent size to start, I would guess its 17-20 years old..

so this shows that Prestoniana is one of the greatest palms for California.

anyone think it aint ?

Just a small little inflorescence on this thing. Gone for a month and it popped. I was reading Bill's post about the first flowering not having a good chance

of being viable, but thought I'd just enjoy it for awhile. There is no bee shortage here, they are all over the flowers.

Thought I'd include photos of Chunk 1 & Chunk 2.......gettin very large. Planted back at the end of 2009 from 3gal.

I laugh when I look back after acquiring them. I made a post on PT asking for an ID thinking they were Allagoptera because of the curly leaves. Oh Boy, a long time ago.

Wow! That Presto is a beefcake for sure. How old is that from seed?

Josh, my best guess from seed would probably be 2007-2008? I picked these up from either a 3 or 5 gal containers back in late 2009 and planted straight away.

Here are a few photos just after bringing them home.

Bumping this thread for an update on all these Big Curly 2016’ish pictures.  How about an update featuring current 2025 pics?

I just acquired a nice 5 gallon that is busting the pot.  Needs to go in the ground.  Picture forthcoming.  Thank you.  JW
