Dypsis species Dwarf update

Featured Replies

Out of about a dozen seeds I germinated, I have two healthy palms remaining of this undescribed Dypsis. I planted them together at the edge of my back yard jungle next to the walk. I believe Ed/edric is the only other person growing this undescribed palm in FL.  He periodically posts updates on his specimens. More and more I see that this palm belongs in the Vonitra complex. You can see that in the dark brown fibers that clothe the trunks. New leaves open reddish-bronze before turning green. Fronds droop quite a bit. Not fast growing but consistent.

I was gonna chime in but looks like you guys got this one covered.

Interesting. I have a D. pusilla in a pot. Will have to bring it over for comparison. Sound like my "species" actually has a description. I like it anyway.

How about this one? It came in as utilis, but does utilis flower this small? This palm is in a three gallon--the palm previously split into two palms and now both heads are flowering. The leaves are kinda fused too. Whatcha think???

Agree, utilis to me as well.

So utilis flowers at about a foot of tunk? Wow...

trauma induced?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I thought it was looking good... what trauma?

I know palms will try to flower if they sense the end is near... however it rarely results in seed, so maybe all is okay! :greenthumb:  IIRC somewhere I have a pic of a Dypsis mananjarensis trying to flower in like a 5 gal pot I had...

I am well aware of such a response. I just don't see any real stress on this plant. I have seen its growth over time and it is doing well from what I have observed. So I inferred it was just flowering early--I dont expect any seed in this batch or the next but over time, and when I repot her, she should set seed as a very small palm.
