Hydriastele dransfieldii in the jungle

Featured Replies

About 5-6 years ago I bought a 1g Hydriastele dransfieldii from Floribunda. Knowing how cold sensitive Hydriasteles are I wasn't expecting a whole lot of success with it. Little did I know that it would be one of my major successes of my back lanai container garden. What a fabulous palm! The dark green leaves are barely pinnate, thick and heavy over a trunk that's only 3-4" diameter. Leaves were prone to sunburn so I laid double shade cloth atop the screen of my birdcage. Otherwise, it grew quickly and trouble-free most of the year. Only when nights fell below the low 40s did I bring it indoors. But one of the results of its stupendous growth is that by last fall it was reaching the top of the birdcage. I held my breath all winter. By spring I knew I had to plant it. But it had to go in a place where the sun wouldn't burn it to a crisp or the wind tear its leaves apart and beneath some canopy for winter cold protection. Deep in my jungle I found a spot where another palm gave up on life. It's hidden so well I had trouble photographing it.   Now I want to get another 1g and start over.

Good for you Meg, glad you've had success with it. Nice palm with an open habit and a great garden palm.

I've got a couple of them, one much larger than the other, but I'm sure it will catch up.

Looks great, Tim. And it's fixing to flower. Mine has shown no sign of flowering yet. I would love to harvest some seeds in case it doesn't survive winter. However, I have time to ponder cold protection strategies before then.

Lovely pictures, thank you.

I wish I can find this species, I love Hydriastele genus but I didn't know about H. dransfieldii

I don't think I've ever seen seeds. My palm came from Floribunda
