Just picked this bad boy up from palms for Brisbane, Samoan Dwarf coconut palm, thanks Kennybenjamin !!! would 'love to see any others out there

Yes the garden is looking awesome............. I had a Samoan Dwarf in my Cairns garden almost 20 years ago. I obtained it from Curt Butterfield but unfortunately a subsequent owner has removed it  ........... Would love to get another one.

Lookin' good there Paul! Better watch out...in a few years those falling  nuts will be putting dents in the ute! 

I reckon you need to plant two more out there...

Be careful planting on the nature strip. The council regularly fine people who use it as an extension to their garden. I've been sorely tempted myself. A friend works for the council and here's how crazy the tree laws are. You can be fined for planting the tree in the first place but once planted the tree is then council property and you can then be fined again for damaging a council tree if you remove it. Anyway if anyone asks completely deny everything. I saw some younger ones at the PACSOA show and was sorely tempted.

I agree with this really being a dwarf. I have a couple growing in my yard and they don't have any yellow/orange coloring to them. Also, the seed are much larger on average than green Malayan. I once made a trip over to the island of Molokai, in Hawaii back in the early 90's. I saw hundreds of these growing in a very isolated area. And I don't recall seeing anything but green. Just my 2cents worth.

Certainly looks like the 'Samoan Dwarf' I grew....... At this size the 'Malay Dwarfs' and 'Samoan Dwarfs' look very similar........ The adult 'Samoans' however have smaller dimensions to the 'Malays'.

Whitsunday Regional Council put in a proposal to make it illegal to plant Coconuts on or anywhere near the footpath or roadway.......... They have dropped that proposal for the meantime but if it ever comes in I will plant Coconuts everywhere just to piss them off !!!

My guess is with a lot of root cutting and leaf pulling, by stunting their growth but not completely killing them. The ones with trunk will probably take quite a while.

I always wonder how long the will really live after purchase, and whether they will grow out of it if someone puts them in ground.

They look a bit deformed to me, but I guess that's what bonsai is.

Took Daryl's advice and drove down to Palms for Brisbane today and caught up with Ben (Kennybenjamin)

Bought another Samoan dwarf and a very nice red hyophorbe indica  

Nice score Paul , if your going to plant on the footpath , just check for services esp. water , as it wouldn't be nice for the council to dig them up in years to come , as a council plumber I know . Your garden looks great and I wish I could keep my grass in control and my garden immaculate like yours . Happy planting , I've put a few in myself lately too , the weather has been perfect for it .

Yes. They are Samoan Dwarfs at almost 2 years. they grow a lot slower than other cultivars. i find that they are less that cool tolerant than jamaican or panama talls. but more cool tolerant than yellow malayans.

here is a pic of my Golden Malay -RIP- it was in heavy decline at this stage and didn't last much longer. I would love to be able to grow a coconut!

In Samoa, there is also the variety called "'Tahitian Red Dwarf" which came long time ago from Papua New Guinea (ha'ari Papua), but the coconut are smaller, please visit:
