Digging and moving mature Dypsis baronii

Featured Replies

The D. baronii below are going to have to be either moved or removed.

They're in the process of getting engulfed by the Rhapis of Doom, barely visible on the left, plus I'd like to plant a bushy Arenga as a barrier hedge.

So, how easily do these move when they're mature? My specimens have been in this spot since the fall of 2002.

Some dypsis dig and move easily, like this D. onilahensis droopy type, which was dug and placed in a pot. Zoop! Rooted right in. I've not been so lucky with D. "cuesta linda" among others.

I can't get a giant rootball; thoughts and experiences by others are appreciated!

Following with interest, as I am contemplating one that needs to be dug after 5 years in ground.

I've dug and moved big ones Dave.

If you can get a big enough root ball you will be ok.

if you don't have a big root ball they seem to die real slow.

I'm speaking from experience.

maybe you might want to donate it to the Vista garden if you don't want to do the digging?

That's a thought!

I can come visit . . . .

I trenched them yesterday, about 12" from the stems.

Hope that's enough.

If not, well, Big Bad Leroy Baronii will produce a few seeds . . . .

Let me know what you think?

I would be more than happy to dig Leroy out.

you will have full visitation rights :) and would make a great legacy palm in the Vista garden

Leroy's staying with me, at least for now. All 18 - 19 trunks.

The others have about 10 between all three.

Still, love them and want the best for them.

For me it would be better to dig out a smaller one if that's your wish.

If I remember correctly Leroy is to the right of your purple king palm?

Leroy is right outside my front door, engulfing everything, except the adjacent 800-pound Gorilla.

yeah, I remember that monster. I think it's best to leave him alone. That sucker is HUGE

You would need a small crane to get a big enough rootball
