So, I go to my local Lowes, and this cute little guy is sitting there.

I have no idea what this thing is doing up here, but as usual, I could not help myself.  Obviously this guy is a long-term pot palm.  Any advice for temps it will be alright outdoors in?  40+?  Will this guy be alright spending Decembers and Januarys indoors, effectively?  Thoughts for long-term pot culture on this guy appreciated!

I would keep it in that black container. And bring it outside on sunny days during winter. That black container can really help warm up the roots even on a cold day.

Nice find by the way.:greenthumb:

I would have grabbed that palm too if I would have seen it around here.

That's a healthy looking plant. Probably a recent delivery from a greenhouse somewhere. There are a bunch of them at HD here as well and a ton of coconuts. Mine is in a trash container at the back of the store...

That's funny. I'm the same way. We had bottles and coconuts at HD here too a couple of years back. I of course bought some.

I've had one in a pot for years...I'm sure I get colder here than you....just bring it in during winter, near a window and water sparingly. You should be ok above freezing.

Bottle palms are great for long term pot culture so that's a good score.

The Home Depot by my house has a bunch as well.  Some even w bulge on bottom! 99$-149$ they want.  Look awesome.  I bought 4 last yr.   the ones I planted in backyard are doing fine.  The ones in front yard are drying up a little, however still pushing fresh fronds out! Giving them one more yr !

How big is that pot? 5G? I have a couple in my home about 3/4 that size, and I'm thinking of potting up this spring. My pots are likely smaller than what you're in there.

Thanks for the input all!  I think the pot was about a 3g?  Certainly a happy find - I paid $79 which doesn't seem too bad for up here!

I was at the Bahia Hotel in mission bay for lunch on Saturday and they had planted over 50 the same size as yours last year Ben but only 3 survived. They are 1 block from the bay and they almost never get below 40F in the winter. I wonder why they died?

I have a big one in the Vista garden and it had been growing all winter long.

Josh,

You need to post a picture, or no-one with believe you, and people you will chastise you forever.

I picked up one at HD about a month ago.  It was pretty beat up so I got it at half price.  $75 for a 10 gal. at 6 feet tall.

One full leaf had a ton of spotting and a lot of brown leaflets. But it had 2 healthy spears.

I kept it inside at night for 2 weeks during the coldest nights. One spear cracked and the other is pushing.

It's been outside full time for the past couple of weeks and is very happy and growing.

I think these are like Cocos, nights into the 30s for extended periods with no day time heat takes its toll.  Keep it warm and in the sun...should survive.   But if you do decide to put it into the ground, use the BS Man method and mound plant it.

Yesterday, I was at HD and they had a group of these......so tempting.

Maybe pot plant it with wheels to move inside for those 2 or 3 cold nights we get.

So how do I get the "Hammer" discount?

Picked up a same size spindle palm from my local lowes yesterday.

The trick is to find the worst looking one that is sitting behind the 50% off sign outside.  Take it to the garden center cashier and then have them inform you that the total dollar amount is too high for them to discount.  The cashier will call for a supervisor. At which point they are so busy it takes them 10 minutes to get there.  All the while, you have to look very lost and sad...because all you really want to do is take home this poor Charlie Brown (reference his Xmas tree) of a Bottle Palm to give it a chance on life.

Presto! Save $75!

I bought two at Lowe's last year about this time and mine are pushing growth.. They did go brown to one green leaf, but from what I hear that happens in the cooler areas. Good thing they put out 4-5 leafs during the summer. My goal was to keep it above 35F. So if it looked below 35, I'd cover it or bring it in. Mine have been out since the last freeze we had which was in December I think.

Keep your receipt!

So you can get a refund if it dies soon enough.

This thread deals with a specimen that looked great this summer, taken on January 31 of this year.

Even more important is the bar code label from the pot. Save it. If you don't have a receipt at least they will give you store credit.

I'm in 9b land too Ben, I have had several in pots for 3 years or so, they go to a covered patio for Jan and Feb and could take full sun after the first year. However, they start to really look bad way before its cold enough to croak one, even at 40-45f they really seem to suffer.

$150? isn't that kind of pricy for that size?

Yours will probably look like mine next year. Good news is that the spear has grown an inch in the last week. Should have a brand new leaf in no time! By the middle of Summer should have several new leafs and look like nothing happened. Mine never saw frost or anywhere close to freezing weather so they are wimps. I just love how these look in the Summer too much :)

This bottle was planted 2 years ago. I think it did better last year. I knew it would be a short term palm when I bought it but It did so good the first winter that I expected the same thing again. I don't have high hopes for it in  the future.

And I actually just pulled the plug on the coconut growing next to my bottle palm today. RIP:crying:

IMG_20160227_7764.thumb.jpg.850cb607dd39

This winter didn't get as cold as the last but it stayed cold for a longer duration and I guess that's just even worse for coco's or any other heat lovers like coco's and bottle palms.

Dang! I don't like to hear such bad news :(  What are you gonna plant in their place?

I made the mistake of planting these in a location that gets shaded out during the winter so I'm paying for the consequences now.

I planted a couple chamadoreas I had  there for now. I also have a cypophoenix nucele that is chugging along in there and should do better now that I got rid of that coconut that I would hesitate to water. The nucele seems to like the water so I'll plant something that likes plenty water too.
