    Cool, nice caryota, you don't see that specie here. Might be too hot. Too bad because

    beautiful form and size.

    My caryotas love the cold. They kept growing right on through this winter. They're a great fit for SoCal.

    It's Mr. Zager's garden. He had the foresight to pick a place that had no utility poles to plant things too near. No need to worry about SCE "grooming" a palm . . .

    Dave are you saying that Caryota no does not do well here in Southern California?  I'm guessing the one in the photo is C gigas?

    Yes, C. no does badly here, in So, Cal, in my experience. The one in the picture appears to be C. gigas, which is dark on the bases of the leaves, while C. no is whitish, though they have similar leaves.

    Yes, I am familiar with gigas, some nice ones at San Diego Botanical Gardens, and this one is growing on my back slope in Carlsbad.  I ask, because I'm trying a no in the Leucadia garden.  I had it in a pot for a couple of years before planting it late this summer.  The no is pushing a new spear right now through winter, and seems to be speeding up now that I finally have it in the ground.  We will have to see how it performs in the long run though!
