Got these pics of a fine specimen of Ptychosperma elegans.

Very nice, refined for a large indoor space.

Well, it's more than one.

They're about 25 - 30 feet (8 - 10 M) tall. This isn't technically a lobby, more like an adjunct building between two skyscrapers, at 333 South Grand Avenue, Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, CA U.S.A.

Had to sneak these pics, lest the goons see you . . .

my guess they would die :(

They don't even survive in a heated greenhouse here in California.

Mardy D. has tried over 100 times with no success..

Happened by the building again this morning, and went upstairs to look down where before I looked up.

They do fine at Gaylord palms in Orlando. I visited in the summer and it seemed to be about 70˚ in the atrium, with low humidity. They're sitting in water though, so I'm sure that helps.

Do ptychosperma elegans have black fuzz? Are you sure that isn't veitchia?

That was my reaction when I saw the close up of the crown shaft............... Ptychosperma elegans doesn't have that. Certainly looks like Veitchia to me.

A gander at my confirmed elegans appears to suggest that I had mis-ID'd these.

Which is even better.

I never get tired of seeing either, even when in places like Miami where each species is everywhere.  I'll have been in Miami Beach for a week and I still rubber neck as I see them off the interstate as we start to drive home.  I don't know about Cyrtostachys in a mall/office building like that.  The Cyrtostachys hybrid might be worth a try and is exotic looking and somewhat colorful.

An easy mistake to make, they certainly do look like a Ptychosperma in those pictures.
