I learned on this forum not to remove palm leaves too soon.... This Areca macrocalyx  is near my porch so I see it daily.

I planted it August 2011and it was probably in a four inch pot, but certainly no larger than one gallon then.

Arecas seem to like my growing conditions.

Simply gorgeous here today ranging from 72-80 degrees F. Where I lived the previous 32 years is expecting snow tonight!

So beautiful. Wish I could plant mine but it is too sensitive for my winters. Maybe it will look similar to yours one day.

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

Cindy what a beautiful palm you have. One of my favorite. Adds some great color to the garden.  I have eight of them. All have various amounts of red. One has just started to seed, even the sheath is reddish.  I have a alba like in your previous post. Small and very slow.

Mine still shows no sign of color.I still have hope :violin:

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Cindy, that red ring portends good color in the future. Out of 5 macrocalyx, only my super red one had that ring.

Nice palms with great scale and shape.

It's gorgeous and I am trying not to hate you for yet another gorgeous palm that won't grow for me.

I came. I saw. I purchased

Thank you all. I love the photo of Dr. George's in 2013 in Philippe"s thread and hope one day mine will look like that!

Cindy, here are a few more pics. Again, couldn't resist. I've got so many photos of this palm I could probably use another hard drive.

The first photo is back a few years after the red ring like yours is showing started to develop.

The color is beyond words.

hmmm, maybe I should plant one too.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

My less colorful one, with it's first seed structure, hopefully this one will be viable.

Looking good Colin. I have three others that look like yours, still nice and seem to get more color the older they get.

In fact the one above has more color than my 'ugly step sisters.'

And.... I love it!!!

After seeing that really red one, I would cull all the rest of the blushy looking things. Only that red one is worth growing and too many is not enough!

Absolutely gorgeous............ I currently only have a green one, the reds are stunning.
