I'm in the process of cutting down a pair of old Dypsis Lutescens that are getting a bit boring.   Last week I started thinning them out with a chainsaw but will cut them down to the ground level very soon.  My question is......how do I kill them to stop them suckering - any proven methods?   And by the way, I cant use poison because I have a Dypsis Bojoufa located between the two of them.

Drill a few holes in some of the trunks and pour a little Tordon herbicide in them. Will kill pretty quickly. This will not affect the other palm.

Thanks Jeff, I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Ok, let me know how it does. You don't need much and I would start out by only doing a few of the bigger trunks.

The dried trunks make decent firewood!

Leaving the stumps is a certain recipe for Ganoderma around here.

So many species,

so little time.

Ganoderma  fungi is good.  I've seen it in the past around several other palms that I've cut down or have died.

I don't know what Ganoderma species you have there but G. zonatum here is very bad for palms.  Once a palm (or palm stump) has it, it is a death sentence.  And you can never plant another palm in that hole without fear of the next one succumbing.

Ganoderma in the environment is a good thing as it decays woody plant material and returns nutrients to the soil.  G.zonatum in the landscape, on the other hand, is not so good.

It's 12 days since I followed Jeff's advice and injected poison into the Dypsis Lutescen trunk.  Actually I didn't use Tordon but  Roundup instead.  I used a 50/50 rate with water and it seems to have worked quite well as the Golden Cane is dropping dead fronds like crazy and is looking very very sick!
