I was just bored and went to Walter Anderson Nursery to just browse and get some soil.

I ran across this Palm which I have not heard of or seen at many of my other Large Rare Palm nursery contacts.

Some research said it is from Brazil and grows some pretty cool curved leaves.  Anyone have experience with this Palm??

yup, I have two in 30 gal clay pots that are 15 yrs old and 15' tall.

slow to start but push with age.

not the prettyest syagrus but wort the grow.

100.00 for a 5 gal is highway robbery.

Yeah I don't buy palms there, it's not a palm nursery but do sell them.  Sometimes they got rare stuff there.   Close to house so I buy flowers and other stuff there.  Good selections on soils.  Thanks for input just never seen them or anyone mention on Palm talk.

This species came into the market a good 15 years ago down here as well. It was popular for 3-4 years and then like so many other species, when thousands of seed became available the price dropped to nothing. $100 for the one in the picture is way over priced.

These love warm weather, more so than queen palms. After this year's warmth, the ones in my hood look beautiful. If you have some patience, I'll give you a rescued 5 gallon one of these. One less thing for me to tend to..

Super slow growers IMO. I have Butias that are faster. I grew a few dozen last year and was glad for them to finally leave..

I had read somewhere they were top heavy and uprooted easy when mature... not the species you want to own on the East Coast.

They look their best in low wind conditions

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I grew up in San Diego and back in those days Walter Anderson was THE nursery serious plant-people went to for their plant material. Always had knowledgeable people and willing to find about anything exotic and unusual for their customers. Twenty years ago when I last went in there this was still the case and I think they still have their reputation. And while 100 seems stiff for a fast-growing palm I think you'd pay that at many of today's SoCal palm specialists. If it's not at HD then you may have to pay handsomely for anything! What the market will bear, as they say...

Walter Anderson Still has great Reputation around san diego, and it much better than Lowes or Home Depot. I go there for all Non Palm related plants, soil etc.  But they have good selection of Rare and Usual palms. Love to take a look. I just know where to go, and were they go for palms.  But I have bought a Brahea Armata there this yr.  And I even found large 5ga Sabal Uresana there for 20$ last week! You never know.

They have the best service in the business in my opinion as well for any questions and gardening. Just not super Palm Knowledgeable, but why would I need them for that when u have Palm Talk!  Was just curious when I saw this Palm, don't have the room for something like that, or the room I have is gonna be for things more robust and unique.  Not a Syragus Kind of Guy this guy.

Syagrus botryophora is a small Syagrus and takes up very little room in the garden  It is slow to start but after it goes fully pinnate, it is one of the fastest palms you can grow in SoCal. I actually find it to be one of the more attractive Syagrus.

I agree Bill, I have two 16'ers in my back yard that are West facing the ocean and the wind for years has messed them up. They are finally looking good after being there for 6 yrs. The one facing south with wind protection is 20' tall and looks flawless.
