What should I do with my "Dypsis decaryi"

Recommended Posts

I bought this beautiful "Dypsis decaryi" 2 month ago ...I had plan to plant it in ground but my wife suggested to keep it inside so we have it as a houseplant now...

I am not sure that it will be happy for a while there...

I have a full sun yard which gradually I want to turn it to a Palm Garden...

My question is , could it thrive in Sydney weather ( Thornleigh) and in my full sun yard? will it ever be like those stunning big beautiful "Dypsis decaryi"?

Thanks for any input

Thanks for the inputs...

We have all day full sun , the issue I might have is not having a  good drainage ...I have to re-think ...

Just don't water it as often as your Ravenea rivularis. Dypsis decaryi grow fine on typical terra rossa soils of Adelaide. There is a large one growing in the grounds of the Mclaren Vale motel they  are tolerant of cool wet. One of my local plant nurseries that specialises in jungle type plants has a few growing very well in full sun the tallest gets all the run off from side the main retail space. The soil there is heavy clay surrounded by vineyards. I don't think you have to worry about poor draining soil in Thornliegh.

Thanks Pip, that's a good news for me , I will bring it to sun gradually and then to ground in full sun :)

Hi all

I found a place for this small Dypsis decaryi in front of my home ( as below picture - at the arrow where there is a small maybe dead frangipani which I will take it out) as it seems not very happy in the pot ...

My worry is that if it get very big in future ( if) and block the passing way ( if it becomes bigger than 3 meter in diameter) ?

another worry is that this place getting almost full sun from morning till afternoon and I am not sure this one in this size could handle it or not?

the plan B would be if this location is not good for it I might consider planting the Ravenea rivularisl, I think it will grow wider than Dypsis decaryi though...and my Ravenea rivularisl seems happy in the pot now...

any comment would be great ,,,

I dig the whole...1 m deep...60 cm diameter...removed as much clay and rock I could...also pour 10 liter diluted break/clay breaker...the drainage is not as bad as I thought...

I assume the full sun should be suitable for the size of my Dypsis decaryi...

soon will plant it there...

And what will you fill the hole with? A mix of coarse sand or something similar with best drainage? "Habitat: Dry forest or bush on stony soil, mid slope; …" And plant the stem base level with soil surface, not deeper.

Pal

at bottom I filled with some compost with Gypsum to help improving the clay/ heavy ... and then used coarse sand which I mix with good quality garden soil...

My worry still is the full sun...

see pictures after the task is done ...planted at level...same as it was in pot...

Mohsen there should be truck loads of Dypsis decaryi growing around Sydney. I spot them in different neighborhood every time I visit.

 should I be worry ?

Mohsen, I don't think so, but our D. decaryi are growing in the climate of the wet zone of Sri Lanka, so they never  stay too long under the sun.
