Big Aloha and Big Dypsis Await HIPS at Austin Garden Tour

Featured Replies

I recently went on a boondoggle to Bill Austin's garden and nursery to allegedly plan logistics for the upcoming HIPS garden tour September 20th. Luckily I only had to make a weak effort at sighting parking and membership tent locations before Bill asked if we wanted to walk the tour route.  Here we are looking at a beautiful Dypsis basilonga.

And, yes, there was Dypsis Hovomantsina stealing another heart.  What a beauty!  The only thing that would be better is seeing a few very nice sized ones in his nursery with my name on them!

Of course, Dypsis carlsmith is a big boy too.  And Bill says a lot of this stuff was put in the ground only 7 years ago, giving hope to those of us just starting out.

Even Bill's garden art is massive, here is the Big Island's version of a garden gnome.

Aloha all,

We've had the privilege of many trips to Bill's garden and it is always an enlightening experience.  Bill has two green thumbs and eight green fingers.  Things just GROW in his garden.  Looking forward to the tour.

Average annual rainfall is about 60"; temperature around 80 degrees.

Perfect way to kill a couple hours just scouting around this garden. In addition to green thumbs and fingers, I' sure there are a few green toes too. Hmmm....could be from all the moisture lately, I won't be checking.

Good to see you post Mary, I hope you will become a regular here.

Thanks for the warm welcome.  It's easy to post when I can use my husband's pictures!  Spoiler alert, here are two more photos from that day.  But you will have to come visit Bill to see the tahina and the R. Robustior.  Gotta save something for the imagination, or so my mom told me...

Here is the real Dypsis ambositrae.  What a beauty compared to the rather homely thing that we got a number of years back which was renamed D. plumosa.

I think Bill has a few Tahina spectabilis in his garden. This one is really starting to grow.

A finally, one more look at Dypsis hovomantsina. You don't have to be a Dypsis freak to be impressed by this one.

I am green with envy. My D. carlsmithii has been in the ground 8 years and is yet to trunk, just 3 metre tall fronds sticking out of the ground. One of these days I will do the transpacific schlep to the big island and experience all the botanic wonders for myself but until that day, thanks for posting all the fabulous photos
