Veitchia joannis on Pico island in the Azores archipelago

Featured Replies

Received a ~20cm tall seedling from Spain and planted into a pot with good soil. Over a month later and no signs of any growth nor decline. Our summers are 25-27C every day (77-80F) and nights are around 70F. This is Pico island, in the Azores archipelago, with the warmest nights year round in Europe. I wonder if it takes a long time to establish its roots? Most other palms, even one from the same family: Veitchia montgomeriana, including some slow growers such as Copernicia baileyana and C. hospita planted on the same day, already showing signs of growth.

Average day temperatures: +17°C in the winter and +24°C in the summer. Typical Summer: 68F to 77F (20C to 25C). Typical Winter: 55F to 64F (12C to 18C). Record Low (past 5 years): 45F or +7.3C (once a winter, some winters). Record High (past 5 years): 83F or +28C (some days only). Elevation 140 m (459 ft.) to 160 m (525 ft.), latitude 38.54º. Sunset Zone: unknown

I hope this worked.... This forum does not accept format from Postimage for thumbnails?

P.S. This plant arrived with the two leaves half browned. No signs of growth or decline yet. I understand, patience is the key.

The pot seems too big again. The plant looks also as if the roots suffered dryness. And Veitchia like humid air. And when so young no direct sun.

Thanks. By the way if you are wondering what the green is at the bottom of the pots, those are large leaves of plants from banana family, I placed several in every pot before pouring the soil, so it holds the soil from escaping through large holes, while the leaf is rotting and by the time roots reach the bottom I hope the leaves will be rotten and do no harm. The water is released from the pot anyway, although sometimes I do smell some foul smell when I water. So hard to make it perfect in all aspects :-)

I think better than banana leaves would be small lava pebbles or something similar.

Good idea. I would have to use diameter 4-5cm pebbles or rather small stones, but I will try.

Be patient, they are still very young and will take awhile to establish themselves. You'll know it by healthy roots and good growth.

Wonderful palms BTW, good choice.
