Why is my Royal Palm yellow?

Featured Replies

Not sure why it's yellow. The other royals in my yard look fine. They have been in the ground for about a year and a half. It's been happening for a long time now. I tried waiting it out by just watering and feeding it well. But it hasn't gotten any better. I think it gets worse with more sun. Could it be the sun causing this?

Those leaves in photo 2 do look like variegation and might explain why it's struggling in the hot sun.

That thing is some kind of sport don't you think?

Interesting...

As you guys can see,on pic #3, the middle is dark green. The leaves that get more sun turn yellow. I think this is the most yellow I've seen it. Maybe it's all those high heat waves we've had this summer.

Being that I have several other royals in my yard I don't mind the yellow on this one too much. I guess I got myself a "blond cuban" royal. Lol

You wont be parking any cars in that driveway in the near future. When those leaves come down they flatten everything.

I came. I saw. I purchased

27.35 south.

Warm subtropical, with occasional frosts.

It look variegated but usually variegation shows stripes in the petioles. If it's variegated then that means it has a rare genetic mutation or a virus. Variegated palms are often rare and sought after by collectors. Keep this in mind.

Los Angeles, CA and Myrtle Beach, SC.

Idk guys. It would be neat if it was just a color thing but I'm actually beginning to think that there's something wrong with my palm. I'm noticing the newer fronds aren't bigger than the older ones (the other royals are). The new frond looks short and today it opened up more and kinda looks weak.

If there is something wrong with my royal, what would cause this yellowing and "short fronds"?

Needs manganese and iron?

This royal already wants to destroy something! Yikes!

If it needs something like that, where do I start? Do I need to check soil? I fertilize often with palm plus fertilizers.

From an article published by the University of Florida: "Most palm nutrient deficiencies can be readily diagnosed using visual symptoms alone. However, in many cases, leaf analysis can also be helpful in confirming a diagnosis. Iron and B deficiencies are exceptions, however, as symptoms are often poorly correlated with leaf Fe or B concentrations. When sampling for leaf analysis, select 4 to 6 central leaflets from the youngest fully expanded leaf. Soil analysis is not particularly useful for diagnosing palm nutrient deficiencies, since palm nutrient symptomology often bears little resemblance to soil nutrient profiles. Furthermore, optimum soil nutrient levels have yet to be established for any species of palm."

I use pam specials too, but I still get manganese deficiencies in my coconuts. When it hits I notice that the new leaves start getting shorter. Eventually they get frizzy-looking. So I throw down some extra manganese and I see improvement in pretty quickly thereafter. This is just my experience in my yard.

Thanks for the info Jason. I think this happens to a lot of the queens around here. I think I should try some manganese. I've only seen it sold in the spike form around here though.

Nailed that one..lol

Dooms Dave can vouch

Carlsbad, California Zone 10 B on the hill (402 ft. elevation)

Sunset zone 24

I think it was "Frizzell top".

I tried buying "sul-po-mag" for a quick fix but I can't find it for sale anywhere. I found a bunch of  retailers here in California on the Internet but no one will ship because of California laws.

I tried a few other stuff, some that I found at home depot and I think it did the job.

I hope I did the job:blink:

I didn't follow their directions and went with my gut feeling.

I would mix about 8oz onto to 2 gallons water. I would get 2 to 3 treatmens out of one of those bottles. I did that at least 4 times.
