I was given seeds I was told were Dypsis pembana, but cabadae seedlings can look similar. So, are these two palms really pembana or its wimpier cousin cabadae?

Hello Meg,

To me they look like cabadae, as I have a few that size.

Lived in Cape Coral, Miami, Orlando and St. Petersburg Florida.

Compared to pembana, cabadae is a total wimp (as is lanceolata). It is more sensitive to sun and cold, slower growing. I can't say enough good things about pembana (I have 2). It's the only Dypsis I've come across that has no issues with my climate and I've tried many species.

Thanks Meg...i guess i have been lucky with the cabadae......i have two, one in shade (so sun isn't an issue for sure) but another that, while planted more mature, never flinched in the sun...and you certainly are correct, they are SLOW...love pembana too, darned things are rocket ships!

They are cabadae alright, look healthy so far

Oh and btw...the one thing i use to distinguish the difference between pembana and cabadae, is the overall colour...cabadae always seems to have a coppery tint to the petioles and sheaths.

I agree, and also use the color to distinguish the two. D. pembana is pure green throughout, while D. cabadae has that very noticeable salmon-like color on the petioles and leafbases when young.
