I wish we could find the thread from several years back. One of our South Americans "Discovered" a new species and posted it and most were awed. It was a cut and pasted photo done very well.

I thought that the subject was going to be some great looking palm.  Got hookwinked instead.

And to think that I was going to offer my own amazing palm image - aw, what the hell, here it is anyway.  Does anyone know what species of Phoenix this is - larseni, or motorolai?

Well.....Jokesters.....I have an incredable palm and it's no joke, to get off the silly side. It's my Butia X Parajubaea hybrid. In the first place I would never have thought this cross could have been made.  It came sailing through the worst winter in years.....with absolutely no damage, and no protection.  It doubled in size the first year in the ground, and I expect it will do the same this growing season.  I expect I will be walking under it by the end of this summer.  THIS IS NO JOKE!

Hi Larry,

Go to Travel Logs and pull up Dick Douglas garden.  The first picture in the series is of the Butia X Parajubaea. I am REALLY impresed with this hybrid. I think it's going to be a super palm.  It should thrive in the UK. Nigel has one and it has taken lower temps than mine.

Zac

Hi Zac,

It was probably my post from +- 6 years ago, when I brought you all to a expediction to find the last ´´butiá-guaçú´´palm (that means:big butia in tupi) in the Paranapiacaba mountains.... I heard from an old gardener (mother tupi- guarani and father a polish),that in his little farm were he lived as child, that there grew a palm with very big and sweet fruits and with the palm heart sweet like sugar cane.

The indians had a taboo about eating the palm heart because it was ´´panema´´ what means´´rot´´But with the white population this taboo was lost and they began to eat the hearts of the palm. plus the pigs that were introduced...it was the colapse of the butiá-guaçú palm populatin.

When we finally found the last tree, João Carlos (the old gardener) chopped down the palm to eat the delicacy of his childhood : sugar cane sweat hearts....:mrlooney::rage::D:D:D

Fortunately I could get about 20 seeds on the palm and on the ground. The photos were of a thick green bamboo culm, with fronds of Allagoptera leucoalyx and big kaki (caqui) fruits....:)

I received E-mails from around the world with folks offering there help to germinate the seeds and save this palm from the total extinction!!!:D

Yesterday I posted another very rare found, probably the missing link between conifers and ferns or cycads...:D :

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=22836

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!
