Archontophoenix cunninghamiana hole concern

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. Our King Palm has this hole, I only noticed it today as it had ants inside! I watered it a bit to remove the ants.

I am afraid this hole might compromise the palm's health or even kill it. The hole is 2/3 of an index finger long and I am unable to put my fingers inside, so not very wide.

Here are the pictures:

you can see the ants there...

And finally tonight after the water:

I am concerned as this palm is already quiet big any advice would be welcome.

I wouldn't spray tap water on the trunk. Try h202 Instead

Thank you.

I wonder if the hole has been there for quite a while. I will avoid more water and try to get Hydrogen peroxide. Will I need to seal it though?

I had woodpeckers do that to a couple of my big old king palms several years ago. I caught them in the act. It's not life threatening. I sealed the holes with modeling clay that I blended to match the color of the trunks and it's been there ever since.

Thanks again for the replies, I am not sure about sealing it or not, but perhaps it is for the best. They did not seem to be doing much to the trunk besides bringing food inside, I doubt they caused the hole themselves:D or could they?
