Beautifully grown palms on the Caribbean Island of Grenada in a Private Garden

Here are some palms growing at about 1000 feet or so on the island of Grenada in a private garden! It seems to be a palm paradise here, much like Hawaii! We are 12 degrees north of the equator here.

I never knew that Hurricane Ivan swept through Grenada in 2004 until I moved here last year! This hurricane devastated much of the island. Many homes still look just as this one pictured throughout the city and island, even within the city centers!

Very nice pictures and palms, Thank you. Makes me feel like traveling (right away!)

Awesome place! Thanks for sharing.

I live in the desert but I am willing to try anything Caribbean.

My bottle palm has done good. I wonder what else will do good here. I remember forum member "aztropics" saying that several Caribbean species do good in the deserts.

I can't get Areca vestiaria out of my head now. I've never seen one before. Does anyone know whether they can be grown in 10a Florida?

I know of one that survived 2010 in the ground, but they don't like our soil that much, especially in the dry season. They seem to grow with very thin trunks and not much vigor here, but they stay alive...

Thanks for sharing scenes and palms in Grenada. Seems Grenada is situated just a few degrees too far north of the equator to avoid hurricanes completely, right? I wonder if Trinidad has ever had one occur there as they are a few degrees south of Grenada?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Hello Al!

Hurricane Ivan was considered a freak event, since Grenada averages about one hurricane per 50 years. It's so interesting living here and learning about the sailing/yachting culture! Most boaters are feel comfortable setting up their summer post in Grenada, since hurricanes are so infrequent. Most of the bays fill up with private boats this time of year! It's about $15 USD/month to anchor here and some of the tiny marinas have facilities that stamp your passport!

are you attending St. George's? or did you just pick Grenada as your new tropical playground? Looks like a beautiful island either way.

Is that in St. Pauls?

I used to live at the Good Hope Estate up there, right after the communist takeover.

Good times. Little bit of blood.

Yes I am at SGU here! This is in La Mode at my friend's garden, which is also the St. Rose Nursery! That must have been interesting to be here during the takeover! Carnival is this weekend! :D
