Hello all, my wife and I recently moved to Belize from Bradenton Florida. We love it here but so far I've been a little dissapointed in the plant nurseries we've been to. I finally moved to a location where I can plant a lipstick palm in the ground and I can't find one. Any members out there with any knowledge of what is available here? Thanks!

My impression is that there isn't a whole lot of anything in Belize. I suggest you look for a botanical garden, if there is one. Find out what palms are native and where. You might also make connections with native people and ask where you might obtain plants or seeds. I saw a program recently on ancient ruins in the forests there and I was watching for palms as well as ruins. Over 40% of the country is set aside for conservation which is amazing for such a small country with only 5 airports that have paved runways.

Finally, you are in Central America so plan some trips to Costa Rica or parts of Guatemala. We have members in both countries who would be glad to meet with you or tell you where nurseries may be. I'm not aware that we have a single member besides you in Belize.

Thanks for the suggestions, and I'll try to get ahold of Lou. We've only been here a couple of months, so I'm sure that in time I'll find what I'm looking for. I was hoping for something like Redland in Homestead. I've already learned to not be in a hurry for anything in Belize. I thought about putting some seedlings in my checked luggage but didn't want to have any problems with customs.

All I have in the yard right now are some really old and tall Royals, and some smaller coconuts. And tons of what I think are naturally sprouting royal seedlings. I'll update this post as I find my way around and learn what is available.

If I can figure out how to post pitures I'll post some of the trees in the yard.

Hello Pericoterry, welcome to the tropics!! If there is ever a lesson in patience to be learned this will be it.

If you're ever in Guatemala, Jaime Abascal has an interesting nursery in Chicacao called Vivero Las Conchas. It's been a couple of years since I've been there but you call always find interesting palms and, of course, very tall Lipstick palms.

Good Luck,

Peter
