Ah, zone pushing. It's one of my favorite topics here. All gardens have microclimates and knowing where the best ones are for tropical palms up here in the Bay Area is a hit or miss proposition. Here are several palms that have done well for me in a south facing, near the house position. Winter sun and summer shade is these palm's savior. All have been in the ground two or more years. Some several.

    Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

     

     

    That's a cracking place Jim. Alot of those grow in this sub tropical region, with vastly different max's and min's. Bravo

    Thanks all for your nice words. I watch these and many other palms in my garden grow and I'm always amazed at their adaptability in this northern climate. I'm also aware that a record breaking or even just an unusually cold winter will take away some of these. It's so worth it though, the feeling of being in a much more tropical environment than I really am. Microclimates are magic sometimes. Some of these palms I showed you might very well be dead or sickly now if planted just feet away from where they are and exposed to colder and hotter conditions. Now, with over three hundred palms in the ground and 130+ species, I'm never done adding. No one can ever describe a palm lover's garden as static. Impossible.
