Now i arranged all the palms in a cardboard box, derived from the 2 liter mineral water bottles.they are really handy to carry these young delicate palm babies from roof top garden to indoor hall area.where they do not get direct sunlight & heat. And are free from any squrieal attacks !

After placing that young palm sapling in a terracota pot,i was reminded of the protection that this baby would be needing from the squrieal attack,so i used the chicken mesh used as construction material to fabricate concretised kitchen slabs..

Krys,

I have started using the bag germination method and so far it is working fantastic for me. Sorry I didn't find this post sooner.

I do have one question, in many of the photos I see that you have let the seeds stay in the bag until they have fully germinated and the leaves and roots are well developed.

For me as soon as I see any sign of germination I immediately transplant the seed to a larger pot rather than wait. The pic of when I transplanted my fox tails http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?ac...st&id=48285

I fear if I wait as long as you do, the humidity being high in the bag will kill the plant or during the transplant process I may break the root.

Which technique is more advisable?

Dear Chris :)

You have asked nice & thoughful questions... i must say what works for one with a perticular palm variety will not work in the same way to another ?

Since every bodies handling technicks will be very different. But for me the baggie method does not work for the following varities for seed germination..

1) Med fan palms..all varities perticularly the blue variety.

2) Caryota Zebranica

3) Pseudophoenix Ekamanii

4) Livistona Robinson

5) sabal palmetto

6) washy filiferas

7) Nubien desert palm

8) Cocothrinax

9) thrinax

10) CIDP

Some varities i do not remember their names at the moment.i think the above palms will do fine in direct pot germination method.since those like fresh air through out the germination process.they seen to hate the stale air inside the baggie bag and also excess humidity leading to misting within the baggie bag.

Other than the above 10 palm seeds rest have responded well,to the methods that i have adopted. And to begin with this germination process you always start with easy or common availability seed varities.then try to improvise new ideas while try with difficult or rare species of palm. And what works for me many not work in the same way for others, because we all live in different climate & geographic conditions..where the medium, external heat, humidity & the nature of the seeds used(fresh or old stock !)All do have their impact on our germination work.

But recently i have started adding strong fungicides to my germinating medium and once i sock my seeds finally i give the seeds a gentle dip in mild liquid bleech solution and then i air dry the seeds,so that the seeds do not appear socking wet.and i never sock the seeds more than 2 days..the results are all great since the seeds are all fresh from our member gardens & some hand picked my members themselves from the natural habititates !

If you have any doubts, kindly feel free to pm.And you are at the liberty to use this thread to exhibit your palm seed germination methods, good & bad experiences & their stills..

thanks for visiting & for keying in your valuable comments & suggestions :)

Love,

Kris :)

Dear Chris :)

here in the following stills you can see,the root has lifted the seed from the medium,i removed the germinated seed and placed it back adding little more medium and took it back to the germination room.I intend to repot this only when i see a sprout.till then it will remain in that baggie bag !

This seed germinated just now,you can see after how long they germinated ! For details see the writings on that ziploc bag... :) i think these seeds liked cool climate since this year we had lots of rainfall & the climate was much cooler for 2 full months. :hmm:

The seeds are from brother M@x.

The germinated & sprouted seed was placed in a 2 liter mineral water bottle, the medium used here is cocopete, perilite & washed river sand in 1:1:1 ratio and placed this bottle in shade at our roof top garden !

By the way now you can see the reused seeds are also sprouting one by one..this give me much needed time to repot these palms as & when i have free time. And this work is very relaxing too..try this yourself & you will know what iam saying ! :winkie::)

IMG_2290.jpg

IMG_2291.jpg

In this still you can see the sprouted section of the palm sapling is somewhat placed sidewards...this is because the roots were too broad to accomadate inside that small dia one liter mineral water bottle.once this palm grows full for this bottle, during repotting or replanting work, the orienatation of this palm can be fully adjusted then..

Seeds Cleaning Method !

Here are some very useful visuals as illustrated by our member_FRITO on seeds cleaning using power tools ! And many members have tried this and have found an easy & time saving way to clean freshly collected fruits.

And here are those visuals... :)

All the above stills courtesy FRITO (Luke)And here is also a video

of the above illustration.

I use a presure washer.

Seeds in a five gal bucket with some holes in the bottom.

Put a lid on the top with a hole big enough to put in the nozzle of the presure wahser.

Just turn it on and rotate the head.

Works very well, just make sure the lid is on the bucket well or you will be eating palm fruit!!

Now lets go back to palm seed germination, here you are going to see .Corypha Macropoda Palm seed germination.I must tell you all that it nearly takes 4 to 5 months for me to germinate these fresh seeds and the results are sporadic.last month one germinated and now another one germinated.but no heat assistance is given to this germination process.. :hmm: And another thing that i noted is that this palm loves clayee soil which is slightly moist. So i used clayee soil in a terracotta pot and hope that this works fine for me..since iam planning to plant all the corypha varities in our house garden.

IMG_2536.jpg

The opening ceremony.. :mrlooney:

IMG_2539.jpg

The yellow powder like substance seen on those seeds are dried fungicide, which i had used during the seed socking process !

A clear & a closer view of the sprouted seed, and one thing i noted is that even before the roots can get deep the top spear has formed, right inside the baggie bag itself ! This is bit surprising to me..since i was of the opnion that they were deep root sinkers or remote germinators. :hmm:
