Found this one whilst browsing the web...

Just goes to show the original value of these palms and some of the reasoning behind their protection status at the time...

Great little story Daryl

x3 thanks and it was interesting.

Very interesting story! But more interesting is the jurisprudence on this issue! Especially the perception of equity, when response of administration to similar illegal practices does not remain uniform without any plausible excuse...

There a quite a few foxtails which have been planted in the early 90's which are now fruiting in Perth and have done for many years which would have been the result of smuggled seeds without question. I remember that the QLD government made the selling of Wodyetia seed illegal (without proper permits) until the mid 90's but no other state put the same laws in place. So all a smuggler need do is get the seed to the NT or NSW and you could do what you like.

The ironic thing is, due to the smuggling and hype that went with it, this species spread all over the world and so seed is plentiful in cultivation. If the unthinkable happened and a cyclone took out all the known individuals on Cape Melville, the species wouldn't be lost to the world.

The idea of having cannabis smoking lunatics with machine guns shooting pelicans and smuggling seed from a NP is actually quite scary really. I hope we don't see that again.

A couple of years ago, Jeff Searle was talking about how they used to fly choppers in, to poach the seeds. In 2003 I payed 100.00 dollars for 100 fresh 'Foxtail seeds, and thought I was getting a good deal, Ed

I did hear that seed prices did peak somewhere around $10US a seed. Now one tree can produce around 600-1000 seed, so $6000-$10000 a tree. Not bad going. No wonder it attracted illegal poaching. It also explains why they painted the red seed green in the Townsville Palmetum back in the day.
