BPACS Outing to Dennis Hundscheidt's Tropical Brisbane Garden

Our local Brisbane Palm and Cycad Society had an outing to one of the most famous Tropical style gardens in Brisbane today. Created and owned by Dennis Hundscheidt, who was an early member of PACSOA and a well known local landscape architect, the garden has been featured on many TV shows and in many magazines.

I couldn't believe the turnout we had today, there were thousands of people queuing up to get in and have a look! A pretty good turnout considering the last few days of torrential rain and unstable weather in Queensland.

They even had the flags out...must have been expecting us?

People were queued all the way up the street and around the corner

Then I remembered it was also an open day for his garden :mrlooney: ...Gee I wish we could get a turnout like this to our society outings and meetings! Dennis participates in the Australian Open Garden Scheme, and today was the last ever public showing of his garden. It helps that it was also shown on a national gardening TV show on Friday evening!

Anyway, the garden contains lots of lovely tropical foliage and flowering plants as well as lots of nice palms...here are a few photos from today's tour...

I should also mention that this garden sits on three suburban lots, so is only a bit larger than a half acre from my estimate...you'd never know as you can't see the fences or the neighbours!

More later...

A very exciting garden. Thanks for sharing and making me want to move to a wetter warmer stickier climate.

Great looking day for it Daryl, that's a major crowd, let's hope the seed of palm tree enthusiasm is spread further. People came from interstate as I understand. So Dennis is retiring his garden from the open scheme, he's a legend that's for sure.

Happy Gardening

Cheers,

Wal

Mmmm, my favorite style garden with it's thick jungle rainforest character. I just love it. It looks like a lot to maintain but the effort is obviously well worth it.

I visited on Friday morning and there was a torrential downpour happening, reduced the queue and made the gardens look great!! I know of at least 1 mad fella that came from Melbourne just to be there!! He might chime in here at some stage.... He might even have a few pics to add??

Awesome garden!!!

I'm on a tropical gardening FB group and a few people went along. Someone did go Friday in the pouring rain! Unfortunately hubby and I were busy this weekend but are going to one of Dennis' workshops next month. I can't wait. I saw his garden last year and it's just amazing.

Great photos! Love his Pinanga coronata. It his palm that made me want my own.

Holy cow, what a turn out! Looks as if he was giving palms away free. Nice garden. I wonder if the Chambeyronia hookeri and watermelon ever hybridize?

Neat! I'm surprised to see C. renda doing so well in Brisbane. The average winter temps are a little cooler than coastal Central Florida. It looks like cold snaps aren't as severe as they are here though so that might help?

Wow, impressive garden, no wonder why the crowd was so large. Sort of reminded me of your garden Jim.

Thanks for posting Daryl.

Keith, I think the Cyrtostachys are 'ring-ins' :)

All of the other stuff was fair-dinkum though

It is certainly a nice garden, but maintenance and watering would be a challenge!

A few more photos...

There are quite a lot of older mature palms that sit way above the rest of the garden these days...old standards such as Dypsis leptocheilos, D.madagascariensis, Carpentaria acuminata and Wodyetia to name a few

post-42-0-54821400-1424676647_thumb.jpg

There were also plenty of clumps of Beehive gingers...many different cultivars as well...

I lost count of how many individual ponds, waterfalls and streams that were distributed throughout the garden...here is another one in deep shade
