New Neighbours

Featured Replies

House next door just sold but who will come in?

The other side approves as the guys lived for years near Singapore Botanic.

I only wish my friend Nigel was the new guy and I would smash down my fence and we could make a much larger palm garden . . .

Who would be YOUR Ideal New Neighbours?

Any neighbor who decides he would rather have roses instead of palms and give me his entire collection of rare palms in 42" boxes.

Any new neighbor here who is open to planting palms is a great neighbor. And when I use the word "neighbor" I refer to anyone who moves into our subdivision - Leilani Estates - which has more than 2000 one acre lots, and about 500 homes. My goal is to populate the entire subdivision with Clinostigma samoense, and other beautiful palms. By having neighbors come over here for a garden tour I get them hooked. And of course I have plenty of Clinostigmas in our newly opened nursery to sell them!!! :D

After seeing all Bo's pictures of his incredible palm garden, I'd like him to be my neighbor -- by way of me moving to Hawaii!  (It's just a dream, but you never know.)

Bo...  What's volcano activity like near Leilani?  I'm thinking buying an acre or two and retiring there wouldn't be a bad plan!  Do you have a recommendation for a real estate agent?

I really should be working!

Bill,

Most of us should probably be working! :D  But then, I happen to believe it's important for maximum efficiency to take a 10 minute break every now and then and do something different and something we enjoy. Anyway, that's my plan, and I'm sticking to it! :D

There are 9 different lavazones on the Big Island. Zone #1 is highest risk, #9 is lowest risk (with no eruption in something like the last 75,000 years!!). Leilani Estates is in Zone #1. That may sound bad, but the statistical risk of something happening right here in our neighborhood in my lifetime is something like 3-4%. Since this is a beautiful area, I was ready to take that chance when we bought land here in 1995.

We've always used Heather Hedenschau as our real estate agent. She has lived in Leilani Estates for 20 years, and opened up her own brokerage firm a couple of years ago:

Toll free: 1-877-965 8774

E-mail: heather@realtor.com

She has her office in Pahoa, 4 miles away. If anyone is planning to contact her, please let me know as well. On our recommendation, quite a few Palm Society members have bought (and sold!) property thru her, and she is definitely familiar now with the special interests that we, as palm growers, have in this area!

Get real, guys. The ideal neighbour is one who isn't noisy, nosey or dirty, and just minds his own business; anything beyond that, like friendly, cooperative and palm-loving, is painfully unrealistic and beyond reasonable expectations - like winning the Lotto. :D

I second this motion!

I like my neighbors. Luckily, I have only 3-4. Their all real nice, and I like it when you come down the street, and they might be outside in the yard, or along the street, and I can pull over and talk for a few. We all do it, and we all look after each other's property.

Well, the noisyness doesn't bother me much as we have alot of parties in the summer. Thank god most of my neighbors are very understanding and even come to most of the parties.... Unfortunately, I have one old bag who lives on the left of me who would like to see the whole block become a friggin library and has called police at least 6 times in the past 2 years - only to learn there's nothing she can do..lol.

Bobby and Bill,

I have the PERFECT place for you guys: it's called Kehena Beach, and it's a black sand beach about 7 miles away from here. Most of the time, there's a nonstop party going on there, definitely with loud (live) music, often Caribbean/Hawaiian style. And most of the people there live in the immediate neighborhood, which is definitely VERY tropical.

Oh, almost forgot, half the women there have no clothing whatsoever! :P  This is - unofficially - a clothing optional beach. Here's a picture that I believe I put in my Big Island thread in the Palapa last year.

Generally speaking, most people who go nude on a beach are not worth seeing, so I will pass on that beach Bo.

The best neighbors are no neighbors, thats why I live on seven acres. But if I had to choose my closest neighbor, I would choose someone who is clean and neat and has some degree of morality. Anything after that is a bonus.

As much as I would dig Kehena Beach (and would fit in just fine there)...  I don't think my beautiful and pure, fair-skinned princess would dig me hanging out there!!   :;):

My ideal neighbour ? me of course. Two lots for palms. Sheez, I'd even wear a different aloha shirt when I cross next door. Say hello to myself,

"How ya goin' Wal ?"

"Good Wal, hey, nice palms"

"Well, you do inspire me Wal"

This must be part of the palm sickness. ???

Happy Gardening

My neighbors are really nice. They look after each other. None of them are interested in palms. In fact, the closest palm to me is a washingtongia and its about 1 mile from me. There are no palms in my town. Having a neighbor that loves palms, that would be a dream.

Meteorologist and PhD student in Climate Science

My perfect neighbour....

No yappy dog

No cat to crap all over my garden and use my trunks as scratching poles

None of those blasted wooden wind chimes that dong constantly

No pigeon fanciers

You enjoy peace and quiet

You enjoy a garden boozeup when the sun finally shows up

You have S2A missiles to take down the microlites buzzing round and round on a warm and otherwise tranquil sunday afternoon

You dont constantly do DIY on weekends

And most important YOU LIKE PALMS

Yeah I know its mission impossible, this is what I have to put up with on a warm sunny sunday afternoon, and I live in a nice neighbourhood.

Tranquility doesnt exist.

Resident in Bristol UK.

Webshop for hardy palms and hybrid seeds www.hardy-palms.co.uk

On one side I have a neighbor that does not plant anything and does not care what I plant. On the other is a guy that loves bananas and mangos. Now he is planting palms almost weekly and at this rate he should show up on the board in a few. Behind me is water thats my favorite neighbor.

With a tin cup for a chalice

Fill it up with good red wine,

And I'm-a chewin' on a honeysuckle vine.

hahaha, reading through this thread is quite humorous and brings to mind what I've come to accept as neighbors.

I'm on a 13K sq ft lot. I have two "ankle-biting yappers" on each side of my backyard fence (left/right side and back). I sometimes wonder how I haven't strangled each one of them by now, esp. since they seem to know exactly when I step foot outside.

I believe the two neighbors on each side of me are in competition for growing the tallest dandelions (Taraxacum for all you genus guys); and we live in a nice gated golf course community?

I would just appreciate neighbors who are considerate and respectful. Keep your home appearance up and show some pride of being a damn home owner. My wife and I are in our late 20'3/early 30's and we do all our own lawn work. I think the problem is some of these more wealthy people hire out their yard duties to low rate jobs that never perform a decent thing.

One last thing I forgot to mention is one of my side neighbors has vine growing like crazy on our fence that seperates the yards. The fence is actually leaning now. Well last summer I got so tired of cutting it back off of my area that I raced to the garage and grabbed my jug of Roundup...you guessed it. As bad as it sounds I took to holding that jug upside down over the fence soaking these things in the light of the moon. Call me a jerk, but this was beyond being out of control.

By the way, does this make me a bad neighbor? haha

We really only have one rather close neighbor - about 300 ft. across the street from us and their house is blocked by vegetation and we couldn't ask for a better neighbor than them.  However, another house is being built quite a distance upslope from us and that house will be partially visible from our place, at least until the vegetation between us grows up some more.  Almost all the properties (lots) in this semi rural subdivision are 3 acres (1.3 ha) or more in size so that keeps most neighbors at bay, though presently can't complain about any of them.  It would be nice if more of them would diversify in their palm choices however.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Most of you are lucky. I got one neighbor who is rather bizzare. I come to conclude that someone in his household has that "packrat disease" where you can't throw anything away. Anyway, I say he is bizzare because he will take the time to power wash the street curb, but will not pick up all the trash spilling out of his cars and home.

Literally, he will pick up garbage to mow underneath and then throw it right back down in the same place. Other neighbors have called code enforcement which temporarely got him to clean up, but I am afraid to because half my landscaping (palms included) are on the right of way and they might come after me too!

The only good thing is, is that he likes palms and landscaping so he does allow stuff to grow. I just wish he would pick up all the junk..........it brings down the value of the whole neighborhood.

The palms truly are greener on the other side of the fence...  but if you water, trim (only the dead leaves of course!), and fertilize at regular intervals then you too can have greener palms where you live!

This is timely as my current neighbor just listed his house for sale and this involves the SINGLE GREATEST WISH  I have for my garden....

that the new owner will have 1/2 a brain and will immediately remove the RUNNING BAMBOO they planted next to our fence line without a barrier!!!!

That stuff needs to be eradicated from the entire lower 48.
