We had a whopper hail storm near work in Brisbane two weeks ago. It caused more than a billion dollars damage, smashing windows across the city's CBD and surrounding suburbs. When I drove home, there were piles of green leaf debris more than a foot tall all over the roads and footpaths. Trees were stripped of most of their foliage...it was a very damaging storm.

It was interesting to see how the local palms fared. Not surprisingly, Syagrus romanzofianum was barely touched. Foxtails showed some damage, but it was not too bad. Two weeks on it is quite noticable as there are lots of brown leaflets on palms around town.

The worst hit appear to have been Archontophoenix species, whose leaves have been shredded.

Here is one near work, there were many much worse than this but not easy to photo.

Has anybody else got hail damage photos to add here?

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

That's an incredible amount of debris. Sounds like the hail storm did damage similar to a cyclone.

This particular storm recorded winds of 141km per hour just around the corner from my place. That is a apparently a category 2 cyclone....... Plus the hail!!!

I drive home from work and see thousands of smashed windows and a few missing roofs!

This pic is from a storm a few days after that which Daryl speaks of but it's all part of the same weather pattern.... This pic is courtesy of fm comic097 and fell in his immaculate palm garden.
