This thing rocks so far! Who would have thought a Lemur palm would be opening a fresh new leaf in the middle of December in Northern CA? How cool does the weather have to be to stop growth? I planted this in April of this year and it has never stopped.

Jim, I am stoked for you. But it is like bragging about your team being up after the first quarter. The end of the fourth quarter ain't for a few years :)

First quarter and we're way ahead so far. I had palm people saying it would be gone soon after planting it out. I guess I have the Bay Area's higher humidity to partially thank, mild temperatures, good soil, and tons of water. We're expecting four inches of rain by this weekend!

this kind of weather is not the issue.

of more importance is how it looks in Feb after a prolonged period of cold and wet nights followed by 100% overcast days.

from first hand experience I can tell you that the decline comes fast when it comes.

on the other hand you may have a better micro climate than me

(but I doubt it)

don't get me wrong - I am rooting for you

it would be bitchin if it turned into a large vibrant palm

That's awesome, keep us updated!

Must be that magic in the sewer line below.

If the soil temps are being kept high, it would be easy to cover the small plants during the coldest of nights and add a bit of heat from a light bulb. Takes some effort, but it can be done.

Jim, what's the coldest 'air' temps you've ever recorded in your yard? Mid 20s? What about soil temps?

Pando, in 2007 I had low of 26.5F. Most winters we have one or two nights where we get down to 32 or 33 or just enough to brown out the exposed leaves of my heliconias and bananas. Soil temps in the vicinity of the Lemur range from low 60s in winter to high 70s in summer. It's a partially shaded area close to the house.

This palm is pushing a new spear as well despite cool, cloudy, damp conditions.

Keep in mind they thrive in Hawaii which is the cool tropics.

BUT that's still a far cry from California in the winter.

Off to a strong start.

That's one I won't even think about for this neck of the woods.

Jim, if you end up having a cold winter you might want to think about putting some type of protection over it to keep it out of the elements?

Josh, I will give this palm protection if need be. At it's current size, that won't be difficult. If the winter is a continuation of what we're experiencing now, there won't be the need.
