There are some palms in the garden you tend to take for granted because they always look good, never require any special treatment, never get oversized or crush whats beneath it.

The scale is perfect, large enough to make an impact without straining ones neck and small enough to enjoy without losing or stepping on it. The entire leaves are unusual with their cut and the beautiful color, deep green on top and silvery on the underside. I saw this palm in Bill Austin's garden a few years ago, picked one up, and it has powered on since.

Gets lots of shade and of course, water. (I threw in the shovel for scale)

Very nice Tim. I recently planted one that I found severely neglected but still alive.. Looks like mine will be fine but a long ways from yours.. :)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Very nice palm Tim. These are a very unique palm. Bill Austin's specimen is the best I have ever seen in person and pics on the internet. Your hookeriana is close behind. I saw a few of specimens on the big island and they really like HI. I am sprinkling them around my garden.

Very nice, Tim! I was considering using maybe 3 of these as a screen, then chickened out when I saw how big Bill's has grown. Maybe I should re-think that -- sure is pretty!

Bill, neglected maybe, but not lost. That's a good thing. Lots of water and humidity is the key for this one.

Mike, when I first saw Bill's it was so stunning I thought I'd give it a shot.

Kim, this would be great as a screen, virtually impenetrable visually. I'd get more plants than you need, some are not as robust as others. I've got another one that's a wimp, but seeding like mad.

Must be stressed, but in almost the same growing conditions. Go figure.

John, Arenga hookeriana. It's in the topic title. Whew, I thought at first I'd forgotten to name it.

Pete, mahalo for the kind words. I need to get a 6' cutout of John Wayne instead of the shovel, but it wouldn't hold up in all this rain.

Beautiful palm! Mine is my absolute favorite palm.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

How big do these get ? I've had my eye on one but I think it would have to be a container palm for me, might be marginal in the ground. I have Engleri and Tremula not that there's any comparison

John don't feel bad I didn't see it either, in fact I'm on an Iphone so I don't think I ever noticed the Topic title until right now or maybe it's my ADD, sorry I refuse tho add the H, I had it before there was one

Tim,

Please stop posting pictures of the same palms we have but that look ten times better than ours do.........we just can't move all of our plants to Hilo. If you don't desist we're going to have to sue for possession of your garden. When you've got ours looking as good as yours, we'll trade back.......maybe.

Tim,

People seem to have a preference for red when it comes to plants and new fronds, but green is a great color too! :) And that Arenga sure looks good! Yeah, Kim and I saw Bill's last month, and that one is a bit of a monster - but hey, WHY NOT!? I may even get one, or two, myself! :bemused:

Great plant Tim! The darling of the genus without a doubt...I am considering replacing all of my A.caudata with A.hookeriana...there is just no competing with this!

When germinating seed ,this large paddle leaf form is not all you will get. I got about 30% paddle leaf form, and the rest all sorts of leaflet combinations. One had a very sparse cut leaf, sort of interesting.....

They can resort back to A. caudata.

Tim,

What a beautiful palm. Yours looks just as amazing as the ones I saw in Thailand. And this is a small enough palm that is a good candidate for even smaller size gardens. Thanks!

And thanks again for the kind gift back at the biennial. Enjoyed! :)

A. hookeriana will grow in So-Cal, at least near the beach. The two adjoining gardens belonging to John Boyer and Guy Young in Huntington Beach had one to display in our November 2012 meeting.

This is just the style palm that I'm looking for in my backyard. IF it can be grown in Dana Point, I'm interested in a seed, seedling whatever. I would very much like to try and grow arenga hookeriania. I love this type of palm. Realarch, thank you for sharing. It's gorgeous!
