A couple months ago I picked up 2 coconuts in the grocery store and put them in some ziplock bags with some water. A couple weeks ago one of the eyes started to open and looked like marshmallow inside, not watery but white and spongy. Now it looks like some white liquid is coming out. I will try to get some pictures but I am wondering if this is normal or if its just rotting?

Thanks.

Maybe we could invent a new term, sprotting.

If the nut was old, it could germinate, stall, and then rot away. Almost all old palm seeds will do this. Basically part of the endosperm being old could have already started to rot. By the time the embryo gets going, the rot meets up with it, and it stalls and dies. I've noticed that new palm seed almost always produces trouble free, fast and vigorous growth of the seedling. But old seed may just germinate and then do very little or produce really slow weak growth.
