I've read of cases where they try and put multiple branches in at the same time and it grabs them like chopsticks and pulls them in.

    Hopefully the new models with the front safety "bump bar" will eliminate these kinds of accidents in the future.

    Like much equipment, this should have a "dead man" switch, which exist on many types of equipment for the precise reason of eliminating dead men.

    I heard of another similar case where the guy was ground from feet to the upper chest.

    This is pretty tragic. It usually happens to an unskilled laborer, unaware of just how dangerous his job really is. I think it happens mostly when a branch is loaded in backwards and the worker gets caught up in a branch crotch or his clothing is snagged. It happens so fast there is no time for a reaction by anybody. I think that if a chipper gets hold of any part of you, it most likely will take all of you, like slurping in a wet noodle or like you see in the movies about getting sucked out an airplane window.

    I knew a guy in the 90's who owned a tree company where this happened. Nothing was the same for him after.

    Gloves with cuffs are a major contributor to getting snagged too. I've been reading all the OSHA literature about this.

    Well, I have my shredder, Ellyn, and she shreds, but isn't that strong.

    That took a strong shredder to shred that guy. Dear god.

    Hope his family's okay, but I'll bet they're not. Me neither.

    I've been taking down a tree, so the neighbors are annoyed at my shredding, never mind they asked me to take down the tree.

    10 HP, Yardmachines, scream ob-expletive-scenities.

    Makes coarse, straw like shreds, come by some day, I'll give a demo. Give me a warning so I can accumulate some, this time of year pretty fast.

    Ellyn takes ROY-EXPLETIVE-STONEAS in stride, hoo-hoo-yes indeedly.

    The only thing she won't take well is heavy dypsis leaf bases, Caryotas all dried or big-assed queen palm leaf stems

    I tried shredding Butia leaves - very difficult!

    Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

     

    No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).  

    Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

    It's a very, very very very old word of clear indoeuropean origin about 5000 years bc! They can be found similarly sounding words also in other languages of indoeuropean origin. For example there is the ancient greek word ΟΙΣ  and the latin word OVIS.
