Very very nice Pete!

You are definitely a pioneer for some of these great palms around our part of the world, you give people like me hope and confidence.

I will hopefully post some pics of mine in this thread in a year or 3 when they start to colour up.

Outstanding as always!

Benjamin,

I am looking forward to seeing your palm, do we really have to wait 3 years?

Even a seedling is nice to see; as you write, it gives hope!

Pete,

Always your topics and your palms are wonderful,

Either through the search engine or because you kindly bump your earlier threads, I'll enjoy seeing your photographs and discovering your garden.

Since you told me that srilankan lowland climate is not good for B. condapanna, we went in the mountains and planted condapanna in a remote place (around 1000 m elevation)

(I hope it'll remind them the Tamil Nadu or Kerala Ghat mountains so they'll be happy and strong)

Until now, our B. condapanna seedlings in Doranakanda are fine.

BTW B.condapanna RPS seeds from last year are= 0! :crying:

If Bentinckia condapanna grows in Rock ridge Ranch - Escondido, I hope it will enjoy the humid tropical climate we have, with endemic Areca concinna and Caryota seeding and growing like weeds. we'll see…
Pete, the french I am doesn't know what FNQ is, can you explain me?

Thanks for wishing me good luck. As I said, we try in Doranakanda (elev: 50m) and in Hopton (elev: 1'000m). We may see a difference.

Pete, Philippe, here are some updated shots of B. condapanna. They really must like it here as they have become quite the 'chunks.'

I've got six in the ground from seed acquired back in late 2010. I planted out at various stages, so I have two big ones, two medium, and two

rather smallish ones.

Tim and Pete,

Many thanks.

Your photos make me dreaming.

Tim, it seems you got your plants from seeds… seeds from Hawaii?

I have had no success with RPS seeds :crying: should I wait more than one year and hope?

Did some Palmtalk member see this species in habitat?

Thanks Paul & Pete.

Philippe, I did get my seed from RPS and as I remember they germinated fairly fast and in fact, Lilikoi Lee and I split an order and we had 90% sprout.

I kept and planted six and gave the rest away to several local botanical gardens and a couple back to Lee. ( she killed off her batch of B. condapanna and I

killed off my batch of D. lamarckianum, so we swapped)

No where near as exciting as Tim's beauties but here are my 2 largest condopanna.

The first one is from seed obtained from rps last year, growing very well and very fast so far! I had around 10% germination within 3 months then nothing since ( 10 months ). I would have liked a higher germination rate but am very happy with any and would certainly buy these from rps again if I have the chance!

Then I have this one which I stumbled across about 4 months ago in a 200mm pot, it went straight into the ground in full sun. It burnt a little bit but stabilised very quickly and I am anticipating it's first new leaf since planting any day now. It is starting to show some hints of colour.

I have noticed in So Cal at least these appear to have the "Hedyscepe complex".. in that some will take off and grow like rockets, while others will just sit and sulk. To that end.. I offer proof in pictorial form.. (since he didn't yet) I had stopped by Jastins the other day and spied what has to be one of the largest So Cal specimens.. In the pic there are THREE. Please note the roof gutter line near the top of pic for size reference. I forget whether he said they were planted all at once, or the smaller two, very soon after.... buthe biggest one IS THE BIGGEST ONE.

Mine did super great for nearly 2 years but started declining this summer and finally died this month (I suspect from too much heat). I'll definitely be growing this species again, but I'll be treating it more like a Hawaiian Pritchardia when I do.

:) Bill, I just looked @ the pics and read a tiny tad, but what you wrote is sorta  right, look @ my 3rd Condapanna to the other 2 ( but I love its colour),and  Jastin's  3  are   very close 2gether.    Like most palms its" location" in the garden, you can have the same palm given the same treatment planted 3 mtrs apart and 1 rockets and 1 sits n hardy moves..

Jasin, theyve pumped since you last showed them :greenthumb:     Pete

Nice job, Pete. This palm is a poor show in South Florida. Then it dies. It likes sun but no heat--hard to do in our climate.

Likewise Keith.  I have them growing in containers in shade and in the ground with Sun.  None of them look good.  Many have died over the years.  Some are just hanging on.  I know other people that have the same problem in Florida.  It has been record heat this year and they do not like it.

Wow pete. They are flying along. My seedlings growing pretty quickly as well so I may be lucky to see something down here reasonable sized soon.

Yowza, Jastin's palms look great, and maybe there's a secret in there:

Condies don't seem to like too much competition, even with plenty of water. I've got some that are planted too close to other plants, and they're not as nice as Jastin's (apparently) stand-along plants. They also seem to like a bit of cover, at least when they're small.
