I saw PalmatierMeg's post on Geonoma and thought I'd post some pics of the four I have growing in the garden. This genus rarely gets a mention on PT which is too bad, they are nice understory palms although a bit hard to identify sometimes. Still pining for one of those 'chocolate Geonoma's though.

Geonoma interrupta var. interrupta, in habitat on Dominica

I thought I would share some habitat shots of Geonoma in Colombia.

Whilst I am confidant of most species there is some guess work with some. Enjoy

Pretty exciting stuff Steve. How in the heck do you key out such subtle differences with any certainty? What field guide do you use?

Tim

Tim

Bernal of Sabinaria fame released a field guide to the palms of Colombia with his partner a few years ago.

The only problem for me is my lack of spanish.

Each palm has a locality map and photo(including variations of which there are many).

This makes identification relatively easy when you are in the field just time consuming.

One of my great pleasures is getting out in palm habitat

Steve

Those epetiolata really are something else Steve. Are they common in habitat or few and far between?

Cheers

Harry

Harry

They are common in there range.

A friend found an area that was very prolific and fruitful last year near Fortuna.

My seed hasn't sprouted after 12 months.

Today I took the knife to one to do the c/section as posted re exposing embryo on this forum.

Still hopeful as the seed looks good still

They grow at lower altitude so should handle heat and not be cloud forest only.

Steve

good stuff steve, good luck!

Your Geonoma are looking really great.

Just in case there is anyone who isn't sure what the chocolate looks like I'm reposting this picture from Floribunda. And you are absolutely right, laying hands on a chocolate Geonoma (Geonoma atrovirens) is a real dream. This pair of chocolates in Jeff Marcus garden are the best representatives of this palm weve seen to date.

Anyone pulling off growing any species of Geonoma in So. California? :hmm:

Geonoma undata, from Dick Endt collection in southern Ecuador, two meters of trunk after 13 years in ground from one-gallon plant
Please don't accuse me of 'Photoshop', as I am a computer illiterate, LOL ! :mrlooney:
