Last week John (Turtile on PalmTalk) came to visit me. He spent the first part of the week at the Corcovado Tent Camp and then stayed with me for the last few days.

The first morning we walked across the street to my friend Alexander's farm and I showed him around his gardens and forested area.

First up is his Johannesteijsmannia altifrons. This Joey was planted about 5 years ago as a small seedling and has really taken off.

With me standing behind it for scale.

Next we headed down the hill towards the river and Alexander's forested area.

Bactris sp. (maybe B. glandulosa)

Not sure what this is. It did not have flowers or seeds so it's hard to tell. My guess is either some kind of Chameadorea or Geonoma.

Not sure what this entire leaf palm is. It didn't have any spines so it's not a Bactris. It had a very tall skinny trunk but it was growing up a steep hillside and I couldn't get any closer.

Next we walked down a dirt road towards the river and we passed this large Cyclanthus. This is the plant that is sometimes referred to in the trade as "Jungle Drum". Possibly an Asplundia sp. This is the largest one I've ever encountered.

The next day I took John into Manuel Antonio and we walked the beach and around town for a while. Then we caught a ride with my friend Barry out to Lou's farm. Lou has been collecting plants for years and has a lot of interesting stuff.

Here's a rarely seen plant around here - the South American Travelers Palm (Phenakospermum guyannense). When this plant flowers, a large heliconia-like bract grows out of the top of the plant. Lou's plants are huge and getting close to flowering size.

Everything looks beautiful Jeff, thanks for the pics. That Joey is spectacular. You took us to Lou's right? The road had almost washed out and it got a bit dicey in places.

All Sri Lanka is jealous these days, I'll see dead palms next week there and post horror pics on Palmtalk soon!

Hi Tim, Yes, I took you to Alexander's and Lou's. I moved out this way a couple months ago. I now live across the street from Alexander's farm and Lou's place is just up the road. The road is in pretty good shape right now, but that could change once the rainy season starts in a few weeks.

Glad you got it! That book actually came from Patricia-CR. I'm sure she will be pleased that someone is getting some use out of it.
