I am not able to identify the species but I loved the plant: can someone tell which Pinanga it can be?

The thin stems look like sobolifera but the leaves do not...

Aloha Philippe,

I have alot of Pinanga, most of which I don't have a clue about their species. Many of them look do similar that even the person I bought them from didn't know what they were. I hope there is a Pinanga person out there who can help us both.

Average annual rainfall is about 60"; temperature around 80 degrees.

Philippe, my 1st thoughts where as Andrews plus Pinaga sinii because of the thin stems but the leaves dont match and Sobolifera and Sinii leaves have which imo have 'more appeal".

"Maybe" this is a variant of 1 of above mentioned ??

Pics below are from Sinii here pic 004 Sobolifera from Floribunda bf1 and Pinanga sp from davesgarden, which are "all" similar but different esp in the leaves of 1st 2 mentioned..

My 2 "favourite "Palms are Licuala and Pinanga which both contain 130 "Known sp", and endless "unknown sp".

My Dream book to have in the hopeful near future is Palm books dedicated to both "all known , and "yet to be named" ( but locations where they can be found): Licuala's and Pinanga's.

All best, and keep up with your "keen eye"

Pete :)

Pete,

I love the black and golden trunk of this plant, and the flower too.
I hope Samarakoon will get seeds from it, so soon we'll be able to get seedlings.

BTW:

Samarakoon's garden is not so big but it would be a nice place for an other Srilankan PRA, drinking tea under a Loxococcus rupicola.

And it's only 1 km far from the botanic garden.

+ Samarakoon is a very kind man, only thing he is not able to get Lodoicea seeds for me!

Kindest regards

Philippe

Sorry, I am almost sure it's not Pinanga dicksonii which seems to me being taller and having stronger stems. (Palmpedia pictures)

So what is it?

samarakoon once told me people who visited various countries give him palms and seeds, may be this species not listed  on palmpedia if not Pinanga dicksonii

there are more than 170 pinangas not all listed on palmpedia

If unknown Pinanga or not you should have one in your garden.
So we'll be able to compare them. see: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/48605-samarakoons-pinanga-in-morning-garden/

I'm  pretty confident it's not P. dicksonii and definitely not P. sobolifera. I can rule out many, many species, but there just isn't enough good information and or pictures on many of the other species. Hard to say.
