After seeing Philippe’s recent ’Fifty thousand shades of grey’ post we thought it would be interesting to have a white post but didn’t expect to find as many palms with white on them as we found in our own garden. Like the paint samples in a home improvement store they are not all the same color of white, which is consistent with the way the word ‘white’ is often used in descriptions of palms in books and journals.

The various whites appear on many different parts of palms. In our garden the most frequent appearance of white is the glauca on the new spear. But we also found it on crownshafts, trunks, seeds, and on the underside of leaves.

Most of the pictures were taken using fill flash, so the whites are more brilliant in the photos than they are to the naked eye.

Here are some of the pictures we took yesterday. We have a few more, but will only post them if no one else posts pictures of those palms. So, let’s see your whites!

This thread is very instructional too, showing details of so many species,

We also learned a lot because we had never before looked quite so hard at the beautiful details of the individual palms. We also quizzed ourselves by taking the pictures early this morning but not identifying the palms until a couple hours ago. We are proud that we were able to identify 90% of them without cheating. We did have to look up 10% of them on Rare Palm Seeds to make sure we had the correct species.

Mike was just as good at it as I was which is amazing because he only became interested in palms six months ago. Must have something to do with all of the hole digging he does: he gets to look at them really closely.

Saw this up on a slope at Lyon Arboretum, Oahu, today. Picture dosen't do it justice the leaves are at least

15-20ft long and the new spike is snow white. Might be Dypsis white petiole? Never noticed them before

there has been quite a bit of bush clearing, and there are three that just pop out now. Might be the

same palm that Jeff Marcus has???

Aloha Philippe, I think you may have forgotten that I started this post after Dean mentioned on the Gray Post that his hair was beginning to match the post. So I said I would have to start a white post to match my hair.......At least there is one person in the family who has hair otherwise I don't know what the post would be.

And in response to your earlier question - Yes, they are all in our garden. But you're not fooling us....we've seen pictures of your garden and know that we are the ones who should be jealous!

Colin, Mike and have never seen that palm at Lyon. Must have really been hidden in the brush. We were disapponted with the palm collection at the aboretum. But that could be because of the 165" of annual rainfall at Lyon, 160" fell that day. We may not have seen the palms through the cascade.

We're so busy with our garden we don't get to Oahu much anymore, but the next time we do, it would fun to tour around the various public gardens with youl
