Killer heat - Sth East Queensland

Recommended Posts

Posted

Killer heat today, chance of rain and some showers for next two days then killer heat for first few days of 2014 with no immediate chance of rain, already have palms suffering, this was all predicted many months ago, long rangers have got it right so far. The spirit of the palm grower will prevail.

Happy Gardening

Cheers,

Certainly is a warm one today Wal...it was 30C here at 8:30 this morning.

Hopefully we get some rain in the next couple of days because the forecast for the end of the week is several days hotter than today...

Time to go out and water the garden!

The heat after all the very wet cool summers is welcome here thanks to the "unlimited" water supply, I threw a little S/clothe over the Tahina's in full sun today as I dont want the new large leaf burnt which it shouldnt as the humidity is high but I feel like "babying them " today :) Pete

:) soundn like a Pom thats just arrived in Oz :)

Thunders "Rumbln" and skies are black here now.

Palms "Love Heat as long as they have plenty of water and Summer is the best "growth season", so "enjoy".

Better switch off the computer with all the lightning getting closer.

We just had a storm pass close by but didn't get too much rain out of it. At a guess, 10mm-15mm at most.

We had the cloud, thunder and lightning and received about 7 drops, blue sky is breaking thru now, always the way :indifferent:

Zero rain at my place, temp maxed out at 36.7 d Celsius, hot wether your a Pom or not... By the way 4 nil in the ashes after today... Boyeah!!

Had the hose running all day and crotons etc still look to be just hanging in there?? Heat is good, dry heat is bad!!!

We got to 35.4 here at home, and it was 62% humidity with no air movement...quite a sweaty day!

Went down the beach this afternoon to watch the approaching storms...returned home to some nice thunder and 11mm of rain...the garden certainly needed it...wish it were more!

Here is the gloomy beach just as the storm hit...quite dark for 4:30 on a summer's afternoon

Very "Thunderous" in our valley but only 3mm fell , valley's to the NE of us had a nice 25mm, our top temp was only 34c but you could see new spears rising on small palms.

I "had " to say the above comment as once Winter hits "Most" say "Wish it was Warmer", plus 34c is a "normal day" in Darwin town and I "was raised" in WA where "Most Summer Days" are "Usually Above 30c and "Many Days" Above 40c , I "Love Summer Heat" :) Pete

Yep. Clinostigmas and dypsis sambriensis feeling the burn

Some bad burn here too...Carpoxylon just wilted totally. Here is my Burretiokentia dumasii that has been in the ground for two years from a bifid seedling and has never burnt...until now...why?

Not trying to sound like a professor here Daryl, but I dare say the leaves that where flat to the sun at the time of burn was when the "humidity rapidly dropped", which it certainly did here , it started humid then became "very dry " for 2 hrs then humidity rose again...I very much noticed that "here anyway" :)

Even at 34c a few palms had "slight burn" and only to one part of the "flat leaflets", I noticed this today and came up with the "above assumption"

Water very very well for the 3 days b4, I certainly will be "firehosing" atleast 35,000ltrs of catchtment springwaterwater to the house gardens, it certainly makes 'palms ready" tp take the heat n grow.

G'day Pete, happy new year mate!!

Personally I spend almost all of my spare time watering, my biggest problem is a lack of spare time!! I will certainly be getting as much as possible on the garden before and during Saturday as I can!

Happy New Yr to you to Ben, yes when most time is taken up watering there isnt much "enthusiasm" to get the waiting palms in pots inground and no point really till weeks of rain is "here n happening" which I feel the "wet" will start in Feb?

Pete :)

Your spot on re getting plants inground Pete!! I have called for help and comic has answered the call, we will be putting some of my palms inground on Thursday!

Hope your right about the wet Feb!!!!!

I have "plenty" tp be planted, but it just dont feel right "yet" and you guys are planting the "day b4" 2 days of V high temps ? hope your putting S/clothe above for those 2 days, I much prefer Summer planting I usually "stop" planting by March

I only have shady spots to plant out Pete, I would never plant in sunny spots 2 days before a heat event! I have been procrastinating on planting for a while now, Paul ( comic 097 ) is on holidays and he has the enthusiasm and the mechanical tools to make planting easy! I need to get my garden ready for my yearly mulching event in about a months time, that means soil conditioning and new plants in the ground now. Now or never for me!!

I hate sunburn on the plants. All the best SE QLD with the heat.

Our heat wave comes next week for about 10 days. So far it's looking like 35-38C for about ten days straight with nights around 22-24C. Glad the bore is working well.

Nice to see some "heat" threads here in the dead of winter in North Florida. Always read the Aussie threads even though ya'll are upside down and a$$-backards' on your weather... :winkie:

One question....since you know you get this kind of weather....why not plant....dare I say....dicot canopy so you have some shade during these heat events? .... What does one use for canopy over there...Eucs?

BTW, perfect Rhopie weather here continues for the 4th month.....cool and overcast but no freeze so far up here in the usually cold north Gulf Coast.

Here on the west coast canopy is a must. In my garden I have a canopy of bamboo, Syagrus, Archontophoenix, a few Howeas, and even some Foxy Ladies, plus a big Euc that will be coming down shortly due to complaining neighbours. When I move down onto the south coast the canopy thing won't be as needed.

Very interesting there ben and pete. I haven't planted out my loxocucus for those very reasons. HA! Who am I kidding. A lack of time also impacts when I spend my precious little time out in the yard watering or moving the sprinkler.

As for canopy alicehunter, I planted sun loving plants out first to provide some shade. At my place ive planted all fauna attracting rainforest trees that im sure will get way too big for my block. Then sun loving palms and cycads. Now im just starting to get into the understory stuff. Its heaps of fun.

Well looks like the hot stuff will hit tomorrow, just spent the best part of an hour watering the garden, just a mild 34 degrees today and then 37 on Friday and 40 for Saturday, gotta say everything has held up very well so far except for that hail we had a while back, all my costas are starting to shoot out of the ground, new spears every where, now just need a week of good steady soaking rain wouldnt hurt

I'm at work currently but according to the BOM website it was 41.4 d Celsius and 27% humidity at my place 20 minutes ago, going to be interesting to see what the garden looks like when I get home?????

Posted

It was 40/40 here a few minutes ago when I checked...40.1C and 39.8%...it's got to the point where everything you touch inside or out is hot...some palms are burning up already...Hyophorbe indica (mature fruiting individual) is already showing burn signs...they really don't like the hot weather.

How does that burretiokentia look after today Daryl?? Hopefully you found a little shade house for it before todays heat!!!!! Got to 41.9 at mine and there are certainly signs of stress on some plants / palms

38 degrees here today, everything pulled up pretty good, beautiful westerly blowing through the house at the moment, very hazy though, I suspect from fires on straddie!!
