Which botanical gardens are the absolute MUST SEE (THE BEST) in southern Calif?

a great collection as well.

the San Diego zoo probably has the most species of palms for any public garden in SOuthern California. It has a good microclimate too, so there are many marginal palms there growing healthily, like Dictyosperma album. There are also plenty of palms around Balboa Park as well.

I'm always up for learning new things!

OK.  The consensus from y'all and the other board is Huntington, Quail, the zoo, Balboa park (is that the zoo?)  I have penciled them into my itinerary.

The zoo is more or less IN Balboa park.

Quail, Zoo, Balboa park all within 30 miles of each other.  The Huntington is 90 or so miles from the others mentioned.

If you are going to LA, do the Huntington, if going to San Diego, do the 3 (probably would take 2 days though)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

thanks, BS.  Wow, I want to do all 4 in 2.5 days.   And shop at nurserys!  I'll need to eat a lot of wheaties before I go!

The zoo really has a spectacular plant collection.

The Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden, affiliated with the Claremont Colleges, is an important research outfit and one of the best places to see California's famous native flora.  UCLA has long had a botanical garden, too.

If you HAVE to go to a mall, check out South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. An astonishing number of mature limited-to-rare palms for a mall. Must be a hundred mature royals, monster fishtails, etc.. Last time there I noticed a Laccospadix australasica.

Anyone know how this place survived the January freeze?

Well, you're in luck if you want to do nurserys too!   Phils place, Jungle Music is a whole 2-3 ? miles from the Quail. Call for an appointment if on a weekday.

I could easily venture that Jungle Music is in the top 5 largest palm selection in the mainland USA.
