Thanks Olivier, that is very helpful. Don't suppose you have any shots of a similar sized ankaizinensis from Tsaratanana?!

Thanks too Len, got a pic?

I know this is small, but does anyone have an opinion as to the species? I planted it as D. hovomantsina in 2010 so it's 3 years in the ground in partial shade in Puerto Rico. These are the only 2 photos I can find.

What an epic trip. Post #3 is interesting and I thought it was a Ovobontsira until I noticed the petioles were not flat and the trunk was not dark. Stunning nonetheless. Do you need malaria pills to travel there?

Thank you Oliver for posting my request and thank you for a "wonderful thread"

Oliver after seeing the incredibly "beautiful trunk and crownshaft", I had to see the top of the crownshaft and petioles to see if it was loaded with red tomentum and these pics show it isn't.

Is it "really" Hovomantsina" or does the pics not show the tomemtum on the petioles and top crownshaft which all pics Ive seen of Hovo certainly show, maybe it looses it with age ?

Do you have pics of petioles and top of crownshaft of pics 20 , 21 since its much smaller and maybe the tomentum is much more visible ?

All best, keep up the "fantastic threads" Pete :)

Posted

Pete, i confirm you this is the real Dypsis hovomantsina.

Young D hovomantsina have red tomentum on petioles. I don't have closer pictures but you can imagine it on this picture

Yes, probably they loose it with age

Thanks for the quick reply and pics Oliver, Ive heard there is quite some difference in size and colour of Hovomantsina from Lowland to Highland dry as these pics from RPS show which is the dry highland form.

I must add that Hovomantsina seed from RPS is very very fast to germinate.. 100 % success, so yet another "bright future" to look fwd to...hope all my seedlings are the "highland form"

All best Oliver.

Pete :)

Hi Pete

I thing there are not different forms. Just that Dypsis change a lot because of the environnement where they grow. that's all ..

Could you imagine that those pictures show exactly the same species in the same area (Dypsis pilulifera - Andasibe) :

GBPIX_photo_515108.jpg

GBPIX_photo_515120.jpg

Another example with Dypsis oropedionis at Ambohitantely :

GBPIX_photo_546833.jpg

GBPIX_photo_546849.jpg

That's ofen why we have so many difficulties to identify species of Dypsis.

And why there are probably so many mistakes on Palmpedia :winkie:

Oliver, you've "been there , done than, and seen it" many times in Madagascar, so i "take note" of all your above comments, thank you. Pete :)
