First law of holes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The First law of holes is a proverb attributed to British politician Denis Healey.[1][2] It states,

"If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging."

The meaning behind this proverb is that if you find yourself in an untenable position you should stop and change tack, rather than carry on exacerbating it. It has been cited numerous times by other politicians and in books.[3]

I think the dilemma here is that the person actually in the process of digging himself (or herself, even though for some strange reason it usually seems to be a "him") deeper and deeper seems to be unaware of the fact that he is actually in a hole - and usually deep deep into that hole! :)

Fascinating to watch. Actually, even bordering on entertaining!

Assuming you believe in entertainment! :D

I've found myself in hundreds of holes the last several years. But I have never stopped digging until it was big enough to get the darn plant in the ground.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

LOL. Oh, and I stopped prematurely a couple of times. Just decided to call it mounded planting.

Sooo, the second law of holes …is?

The hole was dug good, the planting went well, and then…

There are several mature Wodyetia bifurcata in my neighborhood--that helps determine my zone, right?

Keith,

I've done this many times! Or made new mounds for that layered look! Over the years I've learned the hard way to work with the landscape not against it! Unless I have a lot of built up frustration that I need to get rid of. Then I just hack away at all those pine tree roots!

If you want a big hole fast, use one of these. It'll fill one fast too, in case you've dug yourself in a bit too deep.

I dig deep hole on a slope and nevertheless I build up a mound and fill it in with pumice. I water, water and water again hours long with the hose and this darn thing never gets flooded. Maybe I water another one's garden in the Antipodes!
