Anyone use burlap as weed barrier? Wondering how it compares to synthetic landscape cloth, especially in my humid environment.

Havent used it as a weed barrier but i did use it to line some wire hanging baskets. They lasted about 2 years before totally disintegrating.

I guess it depends on the weed. Here it would not be effective at all against Wild Bermuda and Nutsedge. Of course both of those will grow in cracks on an asphalt road, so not much of anything is effective against them anyway.

Tank i have never used anything but mulch i keep around 4 to 6 inches of mulch in planters and use drip system around base of palm very few weeds and those that do manage to get a hold are easy to pull from ground, but your situation might be different considering u get much more rain not to mention year round rain. Good luck hope you keep those weeds in check.

Weed barrier seems to be a must at my current location.

I've put down 3 layers of landscape cloth with gravel on top to a depth of 4". I washed the gravel before I put it down. I still get weeds in the gravel. Here in south Florida I am not sure anything will keep the weeds out. As Keith stated, some will grow in the cracks of asphalt! Or cement or on the roof. Or anywhere!

Thicker commercial weed barrier has worked well for me, I just like the thought of putting something down that will break down into something less toxic. Plastic will break (some quicker than others!) down but I assume that whatever it breaks down to is more toxic than burlap.

Thinner stuff just acts as a weed encourager!
