What do you think this Jube is worth???

I am taking the unusual step of posting pics of this tree here that is possibly up for sale. A person wishing to register for PalmTalk has approached me with a desire to determine its value for sale. She has been made an offer from a passing palm broker. I informed her that these are extremely valuable palms and she should probably test the market before selling - hence this post on her behalf.

I informed her that in order to list, sell, etc. here that an IPS Membership was required. But in lieu of that, which I assumed she wasn't interested in, I asked that a small percentage of a sale be donated to PT if we can help her increase her value. Here are the particulars in response to my request for additional info and pic.

I might add that there are some other mature trees as well like this Med. Fan Palm in the included pic for anyone actually interested in making an offer.

"It will require a crane from the street to go over our home to the back corner of our property, about 120 -130 feet from the street to the tree. The tree is situated close to the pool so that would have to be properly covered. After looking at the tree again, I realize I overestimated the height, it's believe it's about 30-40 feet tall.

I will gladly donate to your organization especially if your help or the help of your website made more money on the tree. To give you the background, we had not even considered selling the tree, but were approached by a gentleman wanting to purchase it last year. He came back this year and has now given an offer, so I have had time to look up the tree. I would prefer not to tell you (at this time anyway) what he offered for the tree, but because I have had time to do a little research, I know it's much more valuable than the offering, even factoring the cost of removal.

We live in Loma Linda, CA, if this helps narrow down people who may be interested."

Thats not the best looking Jub. I wouldnt put my money on that removal.

Yeah not the nicest grown Jubea, but nicely grown ones that size sell for $20,000+ here at a few nurseries that have them. I would tell her not to consider less then $10,0000. The money nurserymen make over that goes to cost of digging, moving and inherent risk.

The accessibility of a tree has a big impact on the value of the tree. Moving that over her house is one hell of a liability that I would personally never want to expose myself to. This tree also wouldn't be coming from a nursery, and therefore there are no guarantees or warranties. Finally, this is a personal sale, which also brings the price down by some.

If you really want to know what it's worth, get a bid from a professional tree moving/reseller, that will give you a much better idea of the price. These type of trees usually end up being purchased at wholesale prices.

Best of luck. If it was in Central Calif. I can think of two businesses that might be interested, Floragrubb and Union City.

here is the good and bad.

its a huge Jub so its size is a major plus and I bet it will transplant well.

it may be one of the Jub types that is more upright with its fronds - I don't like that look myself - I have one of the "killer" types from Gary.

it is much fuller looking with fronds that go below horizontal

but really this all comes down to its location -like has been said this looks like a huge insurance risk on the move which will translate into $$$$$ in fees .

this subject really is one for the pros - it needs someone like Phil or Ken to give input - not a subject for a novice if there ever was one.

The owner of the Bahia/Catamaran hotels in mission beach shipped one from Hawaii that he had craned over a house and shipped over to SD Ca and planted it at the Bahia He also craned some other rare specimens over the house of the late Ed Moore's house in Pacific beach, Just a thought he might be one to contact for ideas or possible purchase

I agree that 10,000 is fair since the buyer needs to spend another three grand to remove. A wholesale palm nursery will try and get it for under 5g to make a big profit after digging and rooting it a box.

How close to the pool is it, I also agree there's something not right about the crown ... I bid 5k ... Crane (on both ends) + trucking will be close to 5k ...

The leaves look like they have been beaten up by the wind. Some Jubs have softer leaves and are more prone to this.

I concur that the palm has a "unhealthy look" to the crown. That being said, I would believe it would be worth anything between $5,000 and $10,000. If they were looking at selling it , jump on selling it if in that range... if want to keep it, then hold out for at least for the upper end.

Maybe she should watch this video. Gary was kind enough to send me the pollen from this tree after it was established at his nursery.

I guess he figured a hardhat wouldn't do much if 56,000 pounds fell on top of him. (I'm joking of course)
