My wife Lee loves all of the new red fronds so we have a few in our garden. Unfortunately she wasn't feeling well and went to bed early so I've forgotten the species she told me on at least one of these. She is our resident expert - I dig the planting holes.

This is amazing... Some really spectacular palms... The Geonoma is endemic and they come by the thousands right outside the village... But this thread does contain some spices that I was not aware of... Will be looking for them at RPS...

The next one is not red but still has the unique quality of having the new fronds in a different color..

Is this what they call the Big White.. Geonoma calytrogynoidea

I sure does look like it..

That is an awesome palm... Mr. Spanner have them on RPS but they are extremely expensive... How tall is yours now after 4 years..?

That is a fantastic palm, Jeff... The leaves has the shape of Geonoma sp. A really amazing color, not quite red, not quite green or purple... I have to look for seeds on RPS...

Jeff, I forgot to ask you about the soil.... I looks very dark, almost volcanic.. Is it like that in Costa Rica or have you had it brought to your land...?

Dear Palmfriends; here in The Netherlands we enjoy these pictures of new red palmleaves too. But, we have to grow them in containers. Can any of you tell us how long we have to wait until young Chambeyronia´s show red new leaves for the fiirst time? I grow a four or five year old Hookeri that is just opening a new leave.............;it's green!

Jonas, Here is one of the plants I collected seed from. This species seems to be variable as I have seen them more entire leaved at this stage as well as split leaved. I.ve also noticed that some of them have new green leaves, some pink, and some almost purple. I'm not sure if this has to do with growing conditions or not. Out of all the seeds I germinated, only a few seedlings had new green leaves. The marjority of them are more red but the one I posted is the darkest of all of them.

The soil on this property varies from nice black soil in some areas, to reddish brown soil in other areas, to fill-dirt loaded with rocks (mostly around the house).

This was the darkest colored one I have ever encountered. Sadly, it died suddenly after two years of normal growth, still in the pot in which I had acquired it.

Definitely not as spectacular as some of the other palms in this thread but when I see red in the palm garden, it doesn't matter how small. These are less than three feet tall. My big C. hookerii just opened a seven foot long leaf but it only had red in its lower half so it's not worthy of showing this time. Here are a couple of young C. macrocarpa that I've had in the ground since 2009 that are showing red today.
