Attalea butyracea - 1 seedling

Featured Replies

I have a young Attalea butyracea that I don't have room to plant. This large palm from Mexico and Central America grows to 60' tall and has a trunk that is the thickest in the genus, according to Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms. Attalea seeds can take up to 5 years to germinate so these seedlings give you a jump on the process. I obtained seeds from an ancient giant growing in a Fort Myers palm park. I found their germination rate to be low. It is slow-growing before trunk formation. While the growing point stays below ground it is hardy to zone 9b, even 9a, although it may sustain leaf damage.

Thanks. I've been selling them on eBay to bring in income after I was laid off. They've become my favorite plants after palms.
