Sure wish I had one.

And I would have one except I made an agreement with an Indian giver.

What a wonderful species! You got a gorgeous plant that is already much larger than any of mine.

I have only one of most monoecious palms, but I couldn't resist 33 of these (as 4" pots planted in 2010) to line a path.

I can't wait until mine get the size of your new one. Congratulations!

Areca vestiaria is a great palm--yours looks like it is ready to be planted in the right spot. Do you have any questions for us, since it seems you are new to the forum? If not, then how about some pictures of your garden? Welcome to Palmtalk :)

Welcome here on Palmtalk, Bismark!

Lovely plant of such a nice species, my seedlings are only 15 cm high; otherwise I ordered some more seeds... and wait!

BTW, did you plant Bismarckia too, Bismark?

Hey man, welcome to PT. Well grown specimen and good size too. Not a fast grower, but steady and

here in Hilo they look better with a bit of shade.

Can you also get Areca vestiaria "Maroon" as good as your first A. vestiaria?

Here one plant in Samarakoon's garden, Peradeniya.

You can't call me an Indian giver, I hadn't given it to you yet. But you should come and get it, it's yours, I'd rather you kill it this Winter.

that's what i'm thinking as well, but if he is planting it gives me hope out here. I will eventually try one since i'm making my front planter larger than I had originally drawn out and is somewhat protected about 5-6' from the house on 2 sides and can easily plant something to block off a 3rd side.

That sure is a great sized A. vestiaria......Great score!!!....... Much larger than mine which has been in the ground for 3 years and just starting to hit it's straps now.

Nice palm!! Planting placement looks perfect, keep it VERY well watered over the next couple of weeks... It's very dry around here recently and vesties like their water!!

Thanks for the advice kennyB, is watering morning and afternoon going to be too much. These dry winds are a worry.

Id head into palms for brisbane. They should have both. Plus a thousand more you'll want by the time you leave

Not likely, Kenny. I will likely keep it potted and bring inside often during the winter months. I like pushing the envelope but I don't think any Areca would be long term planted out here. I may change my mind as I have in the past with other delicate palms with some limited success.

These are to small to enjoy all palms from your garden.

Thank you,

Hello Bismarck and welcome to PalmTalk. (Why is this print so TINY all of a sudden?) Did I hit the wrong button?

By the looks of your garden, safe to say you are not new to palms! Looks great! The A. vestiaria is a "main attraction" in my garden, with 36 of them lining a curving path. Great choice, and a nice healthy specimen, too. Show us more photos, bigger photos! :)

If he does, it will be dead before Xmas.

Why? He's in Brisbane, Australia. Is spring there. Also, is A. vestiaria so cold sensitive that it wouldn't survive Brisbane's subtropical climate? Or is it the hot summer that'll get it.

Keith, I think Axel was talking about Jim's A. vest not Bismarks palm? Vestie's are certainly viable here in Brisbane!

Bismark, nice garden mate!! I will introduce myself when we meet next ( we have met before ). Thanks for the photo's, feel free to post more larger pics in a dedicated thread!!

Speaking of Areca in Brisbane, my A. vestiarias are all very happy, including the maroon seedling. They made it through winter without any protection, and with no sign of any leaf damage or spotting. In fact, I don't think I lost any Arecas this year, with A. triandra, A. catechu, and A. vestiaria all represented in decent numbers. Sure, sure, another abnormally warm winter, but hey, I'm not complaining! I only managed to lose half of my Pritchardia pacifica "thermometers".

Welcome to the forum Bismark! Hopefully we will see more of you. What part of the city are you in? Any chance of seeing you at a PACSOA outing?

Speaking of Bismark, I walked past a nice silver Bismarckia holding seed in Brisbane earlier today, made me want to jump the fence :) Kenny: Mackenzie between the school and the church on Mt. Gravatt-Capalaba Road, north side of the road. It is a single and much smaller than yours at PFB, so I have no idea why yours won't set seed yet. Maybe you could do some door knocking to buy seed :P

HA! It's funny. I drive past that Bismark at least once a week over to the inlaws bayside. It always catches my eye.

Sorry, i digress...

Hi Eric, thanks for the welcome. I am in Murarrie, just up the road from PFB. Not sure on the PACSOA outing, I haven't given it much thought.

Nice vestiaria there Bismark. From what I have experienced, the red ones like more sun than the orange ones...the form with the maroon new leaf will even grow in 90% sun. However, they all love their water, as Ben alluded to earlier.

I think A.vestiaria is one of the hardier species in the genus, and there is no issue growing them in Brisbane, except for keeping them well watered (Ipswich would be a challenge though!) There are quite a few tall, fruiting ones around the southeast.

Daryl

Bismark, how's your Areca vestiaria going now? Thought I'd bump this thread as I just bought the orange one from Palms for Brisbane today. I already have the red. Mine are only tiny though!

Hey Sunnie here is a shot 12 months on from my original post and a few of the orange form as well which have been in the ground a couple of years from 200ml pots.
