Do ants eat palms ?

Featured Replies

i've been away for a long time, and i did sent my father to have a look at my palms and take some pictures. I saw that a jubaea and parajubaea tor tor had some eaten leafs.

We don't have any wildlife over hear, so no hase/rabbits or dogs. we have a very dry and hot summer so snails are out of the question aswell. There is a huge ant colony in between those two palms so i was wondering .... maybe... ?

Manos, ants here do not feed on palm leaves! I have not ever observed around here even ants carrying scales on palm leaves like on rose leaves. That this time of the year appears that kind of damage makes me very suspicious of paysandisia infection, not rpw -palms are still to small for rpw-, plain paysandisia. As the weather cools down also slowers the activity of the giant moth (http://www.fredon-corse.com/standalone/3/D1580r2ZgCrQ5am5Mr70e2Tg.pdf), and plant has the time (also thanks to previous preventive spraying during summer) to push forth any remnants of internally half eaten leaves before they get totally destroyed. As known, or at least should be known, paysandisia attacks indiscriminately every palm regardles the size, species and gender.

Just occured to me! Do you include also fosetyl (1 gr/ lt water) in the spraying mixture? (you should). Especially Jubaea is very prone to stem fungus if it receives to much moisture in the meristem. Also prone to stem fungus when affected by rpw or paysandisia due to the fermentation induced by the chewing larvae!

no i don't, i should use it(or something similar) to more humid marginal palms...

what about hydrogen peroxide ?

Are you going to make two spraying application (first pesticide and after a couple of days h2O2)?!?! This is double work! A mixing of h2O2 with pesticide is not recommendable imo. I am afraid former will disintegrate before application is over.

i was thinking of mixing it. You might be right... this is something i will focus on next spring
