About the recent thread bumps of what one PT members termed as "ancient threads." Yes they are indeed exactly that, "ancient," well at least in the eyes of a young internet savvy person. Plants do not run on Internet time, and making a living in technology, I love that. It gives me a great balance in life. Many of these bumped threads are open ended begging to re-display old knowledge, honor those now departed, give closure to questions once asked, and to offer the opportunity for that most precious "before and after." Every day we plant things simply in the hopes of what may be in the future. I am of a certain age, and as that famous quote goes, I plant things under whose shade I will never sit. I plant them in the promise that someone someday might appreciate what I began. And if they don't and cut them all down which is their right, well, I only hope that they will plant their own dreams as I once did mine.

So there you go, my little introspection of the day.

Palmtalk is not only giving the last breaking news but it's like our grandfather's attic or Ali Baba' s cave, we can search and find treasures!
Being a new PT member ( less than 1 year activity) I really enjoy "bumping" older threads and feel a great sympathy for our fellows who passed away as the "memoriam" logo shows us.

It's a great emotion to read what they wrote and feel a little of their enthusiasm or friendly attitude.

Kindest regards

It's not just people who may have passed away in these bumps, it's also some of the gardens themselves. Lest we forget "Jackson's Jungle".

Excerpt from Rudyard Kipling's poem "Recessional".

God of our fathers, known of old
Lord of our far-flung battle line
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget, lest we forget!

the only downside is that bumps bury recent topics I suppose. So if the bump leads to no response from the original posters and the bump is just a request for an update that never occurs, it probably clogs the discussion board with dead topics... In some cases it can bury an info request by a new poster. But bumping a discussion on for instance the Dick Douglas garden in walnut creek could be a revelation for someone new... and a reminder for others of the fantastic work of a garden. Perhaps there should be a recent topics filter...

I joined PT at the very end of RLR's days, and very close to the end of DIck Douglas and Merrill's active times. They were true inspirations to a non-tropically oriented palm person. I benefited, learned, and was inspired, especially by the latter two. I know of no one today who is filling those voids, at least not yet, maybe in another 10 or 20 years. Until then, these threads should be bumped. The more I learn about gardening and study older books and materials, the more I learn that there is very little new knowledge, just a lot of re-learning of that once forgotten.

Yes I remember merill Wilcox and dick douglas as two very accomplished, wise, and inspirational palms gardeners when I joined as well. these two gentlemen had some amazing cold hardy gardens, their sage advice will be, and already is, missed.... RLR is missed as giant in the world of palm botany. And there are a number of others, still active, who have made the care and culture of many fascinating palm species possible for the rest of us of preservation and propagation of seeds. We are where we are because we stand of the shoulders of giants.... I raise a toast to all these gentlemen!

OK, I am the one who said something, and my only point was that when there are a ton of bumps, not only is there no way to keep up with all the bumps, but the noise level goes up and people who post new posts get drowned out by the bumps.

Unfortunately, un-answered posts don't remain at the top like they should be. So if everyone starts bumping 5-10 old topics per day, then we just end up with a bunch of the older posts and the new ones are drowned out.

Bumping old topics is fine, but bumping dozens of topics per day sucks, because no one has the ability to digest that much content.

As a new user I really enoy the bumbs. Even though I could use the search tool to find a topic in which I am interested, the bumps expose me to, and inform me about, things that I might not discover by myself for a very long (or at all).

To bump or not to bump....

We are a search engine, why don't we get a "bumper" ?

...or a bumpy sub-forum? So the main avenue is not so crowded! :)

BTW, it happened to me that I bumped a thread because I fond all the posts and pics so interesting for me that I thought other new PT members like me would be happy to rediscover that thread.

It's not only for asking an update.

No-one is Pedro, just good points :). Here's another one or two of mine, if you are to bump, then why not consider adding something new to it, don't just bump it for bumps sake. (AHH!! I said Bump too many times), a question on how things have progressed is good enough.

I see at times posting can get kinda slow, that's a good time to bumperoo a few...

Nothing wrong with Bumps, actually when some new threads start and go on and on relentlessly about very very tedious boring stuff , maybe the posters should pm each other rather than post :)

We are all different, what suits some doesn't another and me being pretty fresh to PT has seen naff all of old posts and if an old bump comes up and the heading is "interesting", I will look, I certainly don't look at "all threads" of the day that may cause some "indigestion" :)

I personally don't see any "over bumping".

Keith and Moose who I see as the king of bumps, its your life, do as you like guys. Bump what you want, when you want :) Pete

FYI - Try clicking on "View New Content" (upper right) - then look on the left at all the different ways you can filter your viewing of new content. This is indispensable to me as it allows me to keep up with new stuff across all the forums, filter for the topics I have participated in, the topics I am following, content I have not read, etc.

IMO - if you are simply clicking on individual forums and trying to view and keep up with all the new content that gets posted, you are going to miss a lot.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

Seeing older threads revived can be quite fascinating and I'm all in favor of that. All in moderation of course, but I don't sense that we've had any problems with "over bumping"! And it can be a bit surreal (in a good way! :) ) to see posts by those who are no longer with us. It adds a unique dimension to PalmTalk, and I have to admit - seeing RLR's avatar pop up every now and then is almost like still having him here! Not a bad thing! :)

Thanks, I didn't know that existed.

Not sure what all the fuss is about, I never said there's anything wrong with bumping, I've done it quite a few times myself. I actually enjoy reading old topics, and I especially look forward to Moose bumps because they're usually really cool bumps. I was just pointing out that because of a recent overwhelming number of bumps because of others emulating Moose, (20 bumps in one day) several new posts got bumped down so far that they didn't get answered. Not everyone is aware of the nifty filter feature. So if you're going to bump old posts, I simply suggested to do it in moderation with consideration of others. But it is nothing more than a "suggestion" and not something to get defensive about. Do whatever you want, in my neck of the woods, we just say "it's all good, man."

Hello Everyone.

Sorry if I offended anyone with some of my bumps....Im guilty as charged.

New member here as well and really fascinated with the abundance of info and amazing growth achieved by members.

Most of my requests anyways are updated pics of mature specimens since most of mine are 5G size or smaller.

The updated pics and info gives us newbies hope and inspiration and mentoring from all the experienced and veteran members.

Secondly, I dont read all the posts listed on PT especially the palms that would never grow in SoCAL....so

therefore, I, consciously filter the topics I have interest or the palms I am or would like to grow.

Innocently, Ive never thought it annoying to bump. It actually gives tribute and compliments to those who contributed to the topic and kudos to a job well done. I consider it akin to rereading a really great book, recreating a great meal, repatronizing a great restaurant, reminiscing good times with girlfriends.....you know what I mean?

Cheers Everyone.

Ritchy, I don't think it was you being complained about. Probably me and Moose, and more me. I am a fearless bumper and will continue.

As far as bumps, I use the "View New Content" in the upper right, and within a few seconds can quickly tell what I wish to read. Whether it was bumped or not is easily determined by looking in the listing at when it was started and by whom. The title is usually indicative as to whether it will interest me or not. It is easy to look at how many replies to determine at least the quantity of posts. Within seconds, the post can be scanned to see if there is something of interest. Whether it is a bump, something I have interest or no interest in, a new question or one being asked for the umpteenth time, or just a silly quip in an otherwise interesting thread, the appreciation of the thread or post is matter of individual interpretation. Tolerance of it all is what makes this and all similar boards work. We are all here by our own option.
