My neighbor Esam bought this palm as maxima. They have hundreds that look like this. The one in the ground is 6 years old from a 24" box and looks bigger than a royal (sorry no pic) but just wanted to make sure this is what it was sold as.

I got a king from Phil bergman that he is calling A.teracarpa and he said it is like A.maxima but gets bigger and grows fast with less brown tipping than other kings. Check it out on jungle music web site Cheers

If those came from Woodland Nursery than it is Maxima as they came either from seed from RPS or Jeff Brusseaus monster Maxima (bigger then the one you saw in the Woodland display - if you can believe it). The singles will always be bigger than a triple jammed into a 24. Once planted in the ground, they really fatten up as a triple too.

Great looking palms, looks like could be either maxima or alex as they are so alike. I'm not sure how to tell the difference in those two. I have 3 alexandre and one maxima and my experience is the maxima is definitely faster. Don't get me wrong alexandre are also quite fast. Maxima has so far been my fastest palm, but it still is only a small juvenile at 6'+ overall. I got a 12" bare root seedling 2 years ago and was stunned that it outgrew a 3 gallon pot(rootbound) after the the first summer.... The story of "Jack and the beanstalk" comes to mind.... This year, its first in the ground, growth has been remarkable....

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

It is from there as I don't believe how fat that thing is! Do you think the soil at Jeff's is what makes it fatter? Trying to get the single I bought to be a fatty

No, that plant is just huge. You should see it in flower. Monstrous flower - hence the name. I can tell you they don't really fatten up until about the size you saw. That plant was not as fat a few years ago.

It's usually at a larger/older size you see the two main differences between alex and maxima, and that is the larger inflorescence and shorter petioles of mad max. The growth rate is so far for one of mine, astoundingly quick and bulkier too compared to an alex planted around the same time so I have a comparison thang happening. Not exactly same light or soil, but similar.

Happy Gardening

Thanks! I had to get a single. I've been eyeing these for a couple of years but just now got it. Working on a new planter and just broke ground in the back yard so I'll post after its complete. Mine has a very short upright leaf that's solid silver on the underside. Hopefully this turns into a real fatty!

Looks like a maxie to me...big fronds, short petioles and a fat a****. They are the speediest Archontophoenix for me, too.

Noice :)

My buddy just left for Melbourne after visiting for 10 days, go Carlton!

Tell him to look me up if he'd like to see my garden and what 13 years of palmaholism can do.

And as it's Carlton v Lance Armstrong's 22 tonight...Carn the Blues! ;)
