I have been looking for some time now to buy deep pots (10 - 14") but they dont seem to exist outside the US. Since i live in Europe, ordering them from the US will cost multiple times their price for shipping.

If anyone has any idea where to get such pots in europe i would be grateful.

I use 1,5l bottles with the top cut and 6 holes cut at the bottom's sides. Gives you 25cm easy(10") and its the cheapest it gets for a pot this size as anything I find online in Europe costs more for a tall liner this size.

If you are interested in wider pots of that depth, say about equal depth and height, you can find used, nursery quality black ones in bigger nurseries for cheap or free. I got quite a collection of such pots here from local nurseries as many retail ones that don't produce their own plants, dispose of them instead of reusing them.

Hi Kostas,

thanx for the input. I am currently using 1.5L bottles, and even 2L bottles (milk, coke, ice tea etc) which offer 30cm depth.

I was looking for something more neat though, and Deepots (http://www.stuewe.com/products/deepots.php) seemed perfect at a very good price (20$ per 100pcs). I cant get it to Cyprus at a cheap enough shipping rate though.

They sure are nice and the price is good. Haven't found anything similar, especially price wise,in Europe. Palmeperpacket carries tall liners from time to time but nowhere near the price of those you found and another 1-2 pot companies I had stumbled upon in the past were also too pricy compared to the bottles. I use a plastic crate to stack the bottles in and transport the young plants easily when the need arises, mainly for cold protection in winter.

How much does the shipping add up? I would guess it shouldn't be more than 60$ for 100,in which case its still worth it somewhat price wise compared to the 2 per pot I see in Europe.

If you find any similar ones in Europe for a good price,I would also be interested. We do can make do with the bottles and the taller nursery pots though, the plants don't care and our nursing grounds are just as ugly to others regardless of the pot :) So,happy growing!!!

Kosta,

the cheapest shipping i found was 70$ for the pack of 20pcs, not for the 100, so i guess not worth it. i tried over the phone to convince the seller in the US to unpack them from the original packaging and stack them together to minimise the size (shipping goes according to dimensions) but it proved impossible. They wouldnt take the responsibility to take it off the package and potentially have me complaining if something was not ok on delivery.

If one of fellow members here is willing to try and help us by having it delivered to him and he can send it to us by mail then that could be worth it.

I agree with you. Palms dont seem to really care in which pot you place them as long as the dimensions and substrate is right. Still is nice to try and give them better options to live in :)

I use the TO355 for seedlings http://www.stuewe.com/products/toplastics.php and will eventually move them up to the MT49 http://www.stuewe.com/products/minitreepots.php

i haven't gotten past the seedling stage but I like square pots since they will take up less room. One thing I've found from some plants I've purchased is that if you go from using these deeper pots it's harder to convert to the standard round ones later unless the roots aren't very rootbound.

I live in the states (California) and would gladly lend a hand if I can, so please feel free to message me if you're still looking for some help shipping. i ordered a case of the TO355 ones and a few trays and shipping wasn't cheap but at the same time these are larger, higher quantity, and trays had to be shipped separately but it was still way cheaper than the $70 you got estimated for. a lot of times sellers don't want to ship overseas without tracking and tracking is usually only offered on the higher priced delivery services or they only have a contract with a particular shipping company which may not be the cheapest

the trays i bought for the TO355 i found to be pretty useless, it's fairly flimsy and doesn't work as a carrier since the pots when full is too heavy for the tray to lift. if you go with those TO355 best thing to do is use milk crates and you can even stack all the crates ontop of each other while full of pots

May I suggest you cut the top & bottom off a 2L bottle and tape it to another 2L with just the top cut off so you have 1 long pot. I did that with 14" Stuewe treepots I had to germinate Borassus seeds my dear palm friend Kris sent me.

Kenny,

thanx for being so eager to help out. If i dont manage to bring it over with groupage (by ship, part of a container) perhaps we can work out something together. I was looking at these particular pots only for species who need it like Latania (25-30cm or 10-12'') and the mighty bismarckia which will need at least 14". For the rest species which grow shallower at the seelling stage i am using cheap material like the water bottles i consume, milk bottles etc.

Kris,

thanx for the advice. There is a slight problem here, no source of industrial barrels, and those who have it filled with something, right after they are finished they will try to sell it to you for 3-5$ which is not exactly cheap the way i see it. Still i will visitnext week a plastics factory and see if they have something good. By the way this borassus is a 'monster' compared to what i have tried so far. Would be nice to try it someday.

Dave, that was several years ago. Two seedlings made it and both are in the ground on my new property. The are starting to go palmate. My biggest worry now is winter.
