These guys are happily munching our rue. They look like monarchs but a bit different. Does anyone know what they are?

We get black swallowtails on our rue while the monarchs like our butterfly weed. Here's a link about rue and swallowtails: http://www.joyfulbutterfly.com/articles/rue-plant.html . I enjoyed watching the butterflies in my Virginia backyard today, too. Let the caterpillars munch away!

Those are black swallowail caterpillars. They like anything in the carrot family: parsley, carrot, queen anne's lace, etc.

They have a smelly orange horn that they stick out when frightened. The butterflies hatch in about two weeks after the caterpillars pupate. Many are parasitized by wasps and flies . . . :(
