That sounds a lot like lightning to me. Sad :( 

Any guess as to which type this one is I brought back from the north side of Maui? Seems to be much faster than any of the big box store types.

It's presumably a Hawaiian Tall based on it's origin. 

Nice Fiji dwarf, one of my favorites, it is looking good! 

Below is a photo I taken of a  possible Jamaican Tall Coconut  at Davie near Fort Lauderdale. It is located at UF's Lethal Yellowing Research Center near  FAU Davie campus/Borward College and Nova. It looks much better in real life than in this photo. Surprisingly Broward County has a quite a few Jamaican Tall palms after so many were killed back in 60s.

Yes it is. I slammed my car brakes for that one. I collected some coconut from that tree. If your interested I can share some with you when they sprout. I am planning on going over to Tampa during my school break in mid December.

This is an update from my coconut here in Cyprus.This winter it's been more wet and cool than usual. We had 2 nights at the coast around 0 C but I'm not sure what was the lowest here in my yard. I'm located more inland. The palm is not totally protected and some of the fronds are exposed. The soil is more wet and the protection which I have, opened a couple of times from the strong wind. The first time it happened when we were away for holidays in December. When we returned I found most of the plastic nylon off (I don't know for how many days). There is some leaf burn and the palm looks more yellow than in the summer but is the same every year. Last winter the palm was unprotected from the beginning of February because we had a more warm winter with almost no rain, but I think this year will stay protected more time. I don't know what will I do if is alive next winter and it will grow more in the summer.

It is amazing to see your coconut is alive after this cold weeks.

I am sorry but this lonely coconut tree reminds me the desolated landscape I have seen after the tsunami, so it's not a very happy picture for me.
12 years after, I still feel saddened when I am on the coast and I see the fondations of all the house which have disappeared, what most of the tourist don't notice.

thx. for the pix. It is amazing, your coconut palm withstands those lousy weather conditions. The weather forcast tends to more sun now and higher temps. So I keep my fingers crossed for futher success.

Nice picture. This is also very sad to see all this plastic garbage. So typical of the "wild" unfortunately  these days

 

After the 09-10 and 10-11 cool winters, pretty sure this is the tallest coconut left in the neighborhood.

It almost didn't make it through, but has come back strong. I gathered some nuts from it after Hurricane Matthew, they are in pots of rough sand in big clear trash bags in my backyard, I hope they sprout in the spring.

Beautifull coconut!

A few years ago I visited Thailand and I landed in Phuket. 
During my trip from the airport to the hotel I noticed also a lot of emply plots with only the fondations left and still standing coconuts with dark marked truncs. 
It made me think for a moment what a incredible and scary scenery it had to be those days when the Tsunamia hit the land.

Hi all,

New member here.  That's a nice looking palm there.  I just recently planted a few Fiji dwarf seedlings. I can't wait to see mine get to that point, wow.  They haven't really made any progress since I planted them a few weeks ago.  They were shipped from Hawaii.  Any growing tips?  Is it still too soon to expect much?

Yeah I had seedlings go through that funk after being shipped. Some make it, some don't. There's not much extra you can do in that case besides wait. Good thing you've got others! This is an interesting variety.

Yeah, 3 outta 4 not too bad.  It took a while for these seedlings to take to their new spots but they're starting to improve. I've never grown coconuts before.  Wondering when the growth spurt begins.

How old is your dwarf Zeeth?

I think mine's just about 3 years from seed now. I'd have to check back through my records to be sure though.

The day after Hurricane Matthew passed just offshore the Florida east coast I went to visit all of my favorite coconut trees and gathered several coconuts to sprout. I put them all in pots full of rough sand, and with winter coming on each one went into a large clear trash bag for a greenhouse on my west-facing back porch. Although I am still holding out hopes for the others this is the only one that sprouted. The mother was a Maypan from a neighborhood full of Maypans, so most likely it is F2. I was hoping for more of the Pacific Tall genes, but it looks more like it got more of the Malayan Dwarf in it.

I appreciate any experiences that can be shared on Maypan crosses.

I've tasted the water of the nuts from that neighborhood full of Maypans, it varied a lot, some of it bitter, maybe because it had not ripened enough?

One good thing I noticed about the Maypans is that they seem to be a bit more cold hardy, no trees were lost from the cold 09-10 and 10-11 winters that killed many coconut trees on the Florida space coast. (Location: Satellite Beach, FL).

The humble coconut is planted extensively on the Darwin foreshore

A coconut that I gathered, germinated and planted from Islamorada, FL about 6-7 years ago has flowered! The palm is leaning a bit after Irma and lost some fronds. The fence from 2012 was replaced after Matthew and the Podocarpus has been removed.

I'm going to take down some nuts to drink today so I took a pic of this one in my front yard loaded with nuts. Water from these is very sweet. The best water is from nuts not mature yet. The lowest ones I've been letting mature for seeds so they won't be removed.
